I’m not doubting that mankind has been able to do some incredible things because of technology, but I think there have also been negative effects. People are too dependent on it and couldn’t survive without it. Think about how fricked we would be without the internet, smart phones, GPS, and all that. I don’t know what some posters on here would do if there was no Tigerdroppings.

What do you think are some of the downsides of being technologically advanced?

It's created a world where people have a false sense of things based on the unrealistic portrayal people present of themselves on social media.
And it has replaced personal contact with impersonal messaging.

Yessir. It has given a voice to people who don't deserve to be heard.

perception of more choice, but actually have less. You have no choice, you are fed what someone else wants you to see just like everyone shops "amazon" for the best deal. "oh this seller is $1 cheaper than the others"(amazon recommended).

It has definitely hurt communication skills for many. There is a lack of contact with other people and social activities (especially kids). We isolate ourselves because we prefer communicating online and we avoid face-to-face interaction.

In terms of social media type stuff, it has definitely been an impact for mental health for many, especially for younger people. Gives a lot of people this fake illusion that others are living this "perfect" life. Everyone wants to compare themselves to others. Obviously bullying is another big thing.

Its been extremely divisive at times. Media (all sides) typically depicts the negative aspects of society for the most part.

With each advancement in technology, man has tried to apply it to making themselves more proficient killers

But also let’s look at this idea...

Take two identical guys.
One is locked in a room for a year alone. He has all the computers, TVs, movies etc at his disposal. All he knows of the world is what he gets from TV and internet and what he is told through media.

Other version of this guy lives on a farm. No internet, tv, radio etc. he wakes up, works, etc. He goes to town and socializes. Shakes hands, smiles, exchanges greetings etc.

Now take both and Hand them an AR. Which do you think is gonna have the urge to go hurt and kill in the name of their cause?

That’s how technology has negatively affected us. All the doom and gloom and ugly stuff is at our finger tips and growing due to ratings

I really dont know how anyone could really get caught doing crimes in the early 1800s.

With the correct planning, seems like almost anything was possible

Its really hurt getting children to go outside or be active. Kids can watch anything they want at anytime now and you can play with friends online with everything.

Social media may have made seeing this easier, but it certainly didn’t create it. Look at ancient Egypt for references that are thousands of years old here in just about every depiction of the pharaohs. Hell, until Tut’s father commanded his likeness not be altered when being immortalized (re: no filters), they were portrayed as perfect in every aspect.

Tech has certainly made us less social in many ways, less reliant on ourselves, and given rise to too much nonsense being portrayed as knowledge. Above all else, while useful in many instances, it has largely killed our drive to marvel and wonder.

A few years ago, I was standing in the Louvre in the gallery where the Mona Lisa is housed. It was packed, as you would expect. The sickening aspect though was that instead of viewing this masterpiece with their own eyes, the overwhelming majority had their phones out, on selfie sticks, taking a picture.

Well, the town of Pripyat and Hiroshima would like to have a say in this conversation.

Because they are ubiquitous and certainly germane to the OP’s question.
