The Advocate’s Kubena reported that the biggest move Orgeron and Aranda made this offseason on defense was moving Michael Divinity to inside LB along side either Patrick Quinn or Jacob Phillups.

My guess is that Aranda was somewhat disappointed with last years defense and is seeking more ways to apply greater pressure on offenses, especially with Chaisson now on the end. Divinity offers Aranda more speed and power up the middle. Aranda obviously is impressed with Divinity’s abilities and is looking for ways to make better use of them. LSU Tigers in 2019 will be stronger defensively and offensively, the excitement just keeps building for these Tigers.

I obviously believe in Aranda but I am curious to see how this works out. Divinity was our best way of getting pressure on the end a lot of times last season. Like you said, obviously with Chaisson coming back that should help.

Are you saying that Divinity is better than Devin White, Butkis Award Winner and top 5 draft pick?

I believe if we get the kind of pressure we are expecting from our NT position, we can really expect an upgrade all around. Our D-line was good, but didn't generate a ton of pressure. I think this will be a breakout year for the D-line. Ipu ain't no joke... made the spring game his bitch and he was an EE who's been on campus for like 8 months, shedding a ton of weight and only growing stronger as he continues in a college weight training program. Not only that but Tyler Shelvin seems to recognize it's now or never and he's pushing his arse into over drive as well. Really impressed by the gains on the line. Sorry that was off topic than OP, but I think everybody looks better this year because of the D-line. Really hoping that to be a strength

Don't think he's saying that at all. I think he's saying, that this years defense is more complete, with the addition of Chaisson and the progression of the defense. Just because you lose a star LB, doesn't mean the defense, as a whole, can't improve.

Divinity gonna be shooting through that A gap, while Chaisson terrorizes the outside.

this is a big part of it, i think.

Aranda will get pressure from any angle (position) that has the advantage. However, the player must quickly be able to recognize that situation, and win that 1 on 1 battle. Maybe Aranda believes that Divinity can make this recognition more quickly, and being very experienced, can make more calls for the entire defense better from the middle?

go watch the auburn game from this past year. White blitzed for most of the second half because their center simply could not handle him. At one point, the auburn center was called for holding on 2 or 3 consecutive plays. Recognizing matchups, and winning those matchups are how teams win games.

The real reason is his build and communication skills are more suited for ILB.

Anything to bump Baskerville down the depth chart. He cost us the A&M game.

Chaisson is coming back and then Stevens in that hybrid role will probably come off the edge a lot as well

My take is that we have more depth and speed at OLB. Moving Divinity inside allows us to put more talent and speed on the field. If he and KC are in the same side , then that side of the line has to decide who to double on passing plays. If both of them and Rashard are on the same side of the ball on a passing play , it will be extremely difficult to block those three. I think it’s a great way to protect the inexperience at NT by forcing the center to handle one on one. He won’t be able to get help from the guard or “do dad” from NT to ILB on running plays. Lots of benefit to the Divinity move.

He liked to send pressure through the A gap alot at Wisconsin. Running a bunch of stunts to try to get one on ones for the entire DL.

One thing every defense needs is the communicator. Someone that knows the entire defense and makes sure eleven work as one. Seniors have an advantage. Keeping a great athlete on the field in nickel situations is another advantage of the move

O said in Hoover that we’re expecting more pressure from the line. Besides the obvious I believe better stats might help with the draft and future recruiting.

LSU only had two players 5+ sacks: Delpit (5.5) and Divinity (5). That's not very good. White was the only other LB was more than one sack. There is simply no denying that the biggest weakness with LSU's defense last season was the pass rush.

LSU managed to be a middle of the pack team in the SEC in sacks without having a go-to edge rusher, so imagine what havok the defense could wreak with Chaisson on the outside. Divinity is more suited to the inside and the combo of Phillips-Divinity means there won't be much of a drop off in the middle even with the loss of White, while the edge rush gets a massive upgrade.

This is EXACTLY what Aranda has to be thinking! Divinity was so good coming off the edge Aranda knows what he has off the ends of he can use Divinity like White and he is able to generate that kind of pressure up the middle! Boys it will be rough going for opposing offenses!

Numerous articles pumping up Divinity, they obviously know or saw something, praising his speed on the field and intelligence, which enables him rush and think quickly as plays develop. Great move by Aranda, whose probably grown tired of hearing about the lack of sacks by LSU’s defense.

I agree with you on this. Having a healthy rotation of 2 true NTs will big a huge difference maker. If they can draw multiple blockers it opens lanes for the LBs to flow to the ball. It also allows Fehoko to move to DE where I think he has a monster season. Add to that, having Chaisson back makes this front 7 much more effective and I think we see a jump in turnovers due to that pressure.

Baskerville will be a good player. He was a true FR last season. His only issue is we have a lot of quality depth at ILB.
