I think this is brilliant in the long run, because it will force the university to admit that specific projects are funded (in whole or in part) by proceeds from the athletic department.

ETA:
“LSU athletic department funds new library” or “LSU athletic department renovates chemistry laboratories” is much better PR in the long run than “LSU athletic department donates profits to university academics”.

As much as I support the academic side of the university, I think this is a good thing.

It will make academics hustle a little more for their money.

Athletics has carried its load and then some for years. And still, the campus nerds are jealous of them and ungrateful. Half of them don’t even have a clue about how athletics is funded.

Time to wean them off the teat.

It’s a net gain in positivity.

Right, if you are going to get attacked for doing things you might as well do those things. LSU had the reputation of a school that placed athletics above all else without actually getting the financial benefit of being one of those schools.

This is a big change from the Alleva mindset of focusing on imaginary PR narratives that no one gives a shite about. LSU suspended Will Wade in an effort to show just how awesome we were at following rules and the return on that move was a new round of negative articles, no improvement in reputation, and a tourney team playing without a head coach.

Did you read the article? It was like $50 million (2012 through 2017, so $8 to $10 million a year).

frick that. Either we want to beat Bama or not. That takes money.

That’s not true and that’s not what he said. He said that LSU Athletics does not have a moral obligation to help the University and that is not the responsibility of the Athletic department. He is correct. He also left the door open for potential donations to be made, but the guaranteed money to the University for them to do whatever they like with it is over. They have mismanaged funds time and time again.

The all in cost for a state university education in general is out of hand. A student could work part time and during the summer to cover most costs when I went to school in the early 80's. This is certainly not the case currently.

The state needs to pony up more dollars, especially for the dramatic deficiencies at our flagship institution! Tuition and fees need to be lowered!

I have gained greatly from my Louisiana supported education and would gladly pay more taxes to enable the future of our state to benefit.

I also support both the TAF and LSU Foundation with donations. I have done this in the past and will continue to do so.

Because the athletic department in this state is self funding( unlike other states), I agree with this current policy change by Woodward.

The academic tear down of LSU began with Jindal. We need to stop the bleeding and "Make LSU great again!"

Wow.

The athletic dept isn't legally separate from the university (TAF is, which is why I have no problem with what TAF does).

I think the AD should continue to transfer money to the academic side, but I think it should be targeted. Not just a subsidy.

Maybe if the science lab needs microscopes, the AD money pays for that, etc. So that why it's not a stream of cash that the academic side depends upon, but rather, money for special projects.

Good. It's not the AD's job to send money to the academic side.

My guess is Scott came in and asked the same thing. Where has this money been going? And they didn’t give him a good answer.

Good. It's not the job of the athletic department to properly fund the university. People who donate to athletics expect the money to go to athletics.

From what I heard, he is will stop giving the University a big check with no oversight into where the money goes.

The Athletic Department will, however, help with occasional and very specific university needs where they will know how the money is being spent.

This is a gut punch to King Alexander. I love it.

F. King has bullied and backstabbed to get his way for years at LSU (go talk to one of the half dozen Chancellors that have left because of him if you want details). It's refreshing to see someone push back for once.

This puts more pressure on King and undoubtedly serves as a threat to his future at LSU.

If I were to donate $5M to an organization and they wisely spent $3M of it, but spent the other $2M on bone-headed, poorly conceived ideas....I wouldn’t be happy.

Just speculating....but maybe this will result in more control and efficient use of the funds? Just a thought.

Maybe nothing really changes but the funds are stretched further on the academic side?

Do you really think Woodward just woke up and decided to remove big stream of funding from the university? I would bet this was discussed a long time ago and this didn't surprise anyone in the administration.
