Tlaib Wants a $20 Minimum Wage for Tipped Workers

The federal tipped minimum is currently $2.13 an hour. Tlaib's proposal, which amounts to an increase of almost 940 percent, would spell trouble for many dining establishments, particularly those of the mom and pop variety, many of which would require a miracle to comply with Tlaib's proposal and stay in business. A recent study released by two researchers from Harvard University's Business School concluded that a median-rated restaurant on Yelp (3.5 stars) was 14 percent more likely to close with each additional dollar added to the tipped wage.

A corresponding survey released by the NYC Hospitality Alliance found that, in response to that increase, 75 percent of full-service establishments will cut employee hours in 2019, and 47 percent will eliminate jobs entirely.

Jesus Christ, I'm going to have to fake my resume so I can be a waiter.

How many Democrats would openly disagree with her? Radical retards have that party by the balls.

Leads to more people on the government teat. Ultimate goal, right?

No Dem will disagree. They will just try to go further. Elizabeth Warren about to announce plan for $30/hr minimum wage...

No thanks. The negative consequences are too far reaching than to want to do it out of some childish spite.
Jesus some of you people are insane

$41k/year per employee for slinging hash

The Dems have completely gone off the deep in this week.
Didn't even think it was possible to go further, but they did

Is she proposing 20/hr plus tips or is tipping going away?

They don't really address that
But there are certainly tipped employees that do much better than 20 an hour in finer establishments

That's a good question...I can't imagine keeping the tips..but then menu prices would go up pretty high..

Let me preface this by saying I'm not for minimum wage of any kind. Whatsoever. Period.
That said, let these liberal states individually raise their state's minimum wage, and let conservative states abolish it. Then, let's document it and watch who sails and who fails.
Industry would dry up so quickly in places like California and New York. That industry would rapidly move to "No MW" states and actually have to be competitive in the salary/wage market to sustain themselves.

Problem is the federal minimum wage would take priority over the state laws

I'm curious how that plays out on menu costs
You've got a 600% rise in labor costs for about half your staff. Combine that with a $15 minimum wage and that could be a hefty price.

If severs are making $20 an hour then tips are going away whether it's "mandated" or not.
Not that that proposal has a snowballs chance in hell. If it passed then all the restaurants that don't close their doors would be switching to buffets, couldn't afford any wait staff.

Patrons get wind of a $20/hr wage increase, plus tips for being a waiter, will simply mean people won’t tip as much, presumably around or under 10%, or won’t tip at all.
$41k/yr for a waiter is plenty at $20/hr.
