Zlatan: MLS can never reach the level of European soccer leagues with salary cap in place

When I asked Zlatan what it will take for MLS to achieve parity with Europe and South America, he responds with a question.
"Do they want to make it?"
"Who is 'they'?"
"They that control it. The owners. Do they want it to be big?"
"Yeah. Of course."
"You think?"
"You don't?"
"I don't."
"Why?"
"Because you don't make money in soccer," he tells me. "In Europe, I can pick two clubs that make money. The rest don't; they do it out of passion. Here, with the sports, you make money. That's it. And I think with all the rules you have here, you are not boosting up the soccer."
What rules?
"The budget things. The salary cap. You cannot bring in players you want. They have more rules here than I have in my home."

But it's not true though.

Water is wet.

He’s right
He's actually completely wrong. MLS clubs still operate mainly in the red and Euro clubs have become mostly profitable since the FFP rules have kept them from spending themselves into oblivion.

A majority of clubs other than the top dogs operate right at the break even mark

You are talking about a very small selection of teams. According to one of UEFA's financial reports linked here LINK with a summary here LINK:
quote:
Five (9%) of the leagues generated €972M ($1.11B) of the €615M($701M) bottom line profit while the other 81% lost a combined €357M ($407M).
It's literally the big TV deals of especially the PL teams that drives the profitability numbers. Most clubs in Europe do not have access to that sort of deal, and thus are run on very tight budgets.

No shite. (As long as he's talking about the top 5 leagues)

Why does that counter the point that teams are no longer losing money on the regular? Are you also trying to be disingenuous and reinforce that only 2 teams in Europe are profitable?

and I could care less. MLS needs to embrace being a developmental league. We need to maximum age caps, and create friendlies against teams full of Americans who don't see much PT with their regular teams.

I love soccer and i dont want to watch a developmental league. Why would a casual?

Second that. I'm trying to watch the USL and having trouble with that. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's the development league for the MLS.

Because outside of the PL, teams do lose money, and quite a bit. There are certainly teams that produce a profit, but the UEFA data suggests that is a minority of teams.

Soccer makes money?!
You know nothing about soccer. It’s the fabric of so many communities in the world and you bet your arse those clubs know better to frick with that passion. Imagine Boca charging Arsenal prices for tickets, there will a civil war in Argentina.

You don’t have to then.
There plenty of other leagues on television to watch

So care less then

I think that should be the next step.

No we don't, but we should probably add a rule to have a minimum number of U21 or U23 player in the matchday 18.

I don't understand what you're talking about here.
I want the league to get better, but not at the expense of the American player.
