I wish I had known about this place when I was in Dublin last month. I would have swung by for a picture and OT shout out with that dude.

Im honestly confused about everyone's reaction to this

Person A offered marketing for Business A in exchange for Business A's goods

This is typical standard business practice that has gone on for ages

Business A goes off on weird tangent about "how they will pay their expenses" and everyone finds them hilarious?

What am I missing?

That was actually my first thought too. I hate "social media influencers" as much as anyone and enjoy seeing them get knocked down a peg...but it's not like they were just asking for free stuff. They were going to market for them, so the answer to all his questions of who would pay the people would be him with the increased revenue/booking rate after being featured.

Now, if the place is already pretty much always sold out then it makes sense, but he could've just said no we don't need any marketing and left it at that

I think his point was more along the lines of "if we want to use social influencers as part of our marketing efforts, we'll contact you...otherwise, stop going around peddling for free stuff"

Like I said, if you look through them, a lot of them are bullshite accounts. A good bit of them are real and a percentage of the "real" accounts are not consistently active.

My whole point is that people overestimate the these "influencers". Now if you have 500k, 2M.... 5M followers.. Then the percentage of those followers who will actually see something you posted is enough for it to be worth it.

72k twitter followers isn't really that much and there are people who pay for followers. I don't know how many you get at what price, but people actually pay for that shite.. And someone with 72k followers who claims to be an influencer.. I'd say there is a good chance they paid to get a lump of followers at first.

1700 followers isn't much at all. Anyone who has been on twitter fr 7 years and has been somewhat active during that time can easily get 1700.

i'm really not sure what to think about them. their fb page is full of posts basically telling people to frick off if they don't like the place.

but, someone calling themselves an "influencer" just bugs me and i love seeing them get shutdown.

When did making this face for a picture become popular? This might be worse than the trend of girls doing duck face.

This is my opinion, but this "influencer" seems to have an inflated worth.

In reality, you can't blame them for trying. Not sure why the owner/manager.. whatever got mad because that's the world we live in today.

People always ask "what industries will people work in as technology takes over jobs humans do". I see being a "social media influencer" as one of those avenues that is an example of people adapting to the changing world we live in.

I hate the “social influencer” world we live in as much as anyone, but it’s not like she was asking for free stuff just because she’s “internet famous.” She was offering to basically market the hotel to her thousands of followers in exchange for accommodations. Seems like it could be a “fair” offer, maybe not, but it was just an offer. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

This is absolutely true whether people like to admit it or not. The influencers are essentially ad agencies providing modern versions of advertisement.

Influencers produce a ton of schadenfreude and I admit I have my share. It is pretty easy to cause this effect when there are people out there that can make more money for a single IG post than anyone here makes in a full year of work.

Correct. But her strategy in getting free shite for her trip was "I have a lot of followers and it 'worked' for Universal..."

She made no mention of the demographic breakdown of her followers and how that aligns with the type of tourist he's attracting, her click-through rate, etc.

I know i'm old but for the life of me I just don't get the whole "influencer" thing. What gives these Douche bags the credibility to promote anything.

Its no different than TV. TV stations put content on their channel that will attract people to watch. The higher the rating the content gets, the more advertisers are charged to promote their product.

If people on social media are providing content that draws a lot of people to their page, youtube channel, etc then companies have an interest in paying them to advertise their product.

The only thing people should be aware of is that the number of followers a person has doesn't mean that's the number of people they will reach out to.. In other words, there has to be some type of general percentage of followers who will actually see an advertisement.. But some "influencers" numbers can be inflated through several avenues and a number like 76k can be tricky.
