First get your CCNA and learn python or another basic scripting language. Maybe even get devops certified.
Second move to any metro city and you will have no problem getting a job starting around 60k.
Third bust your arse for 10 years and learn as much as can about every aspect of IT.
Forth get paid what you are really worth and retire in your fifties.

No not really. I literally am a living example. My last 2 jobs said told me after i hired, its more about the interview than any piece of paper.

You need the piece of paper, and some experience, to get the interview in the first place.

your anecdotal experience aside, you gave really bad advice. your experience is not the norm, and the whole point of the thread is how to get someone from 0 to an IT job. Half of that battle is getting the interview - and certs are incredibly valuable to that process.

You're also just now up to 60k...Not a knock, its above the norm here but look at what it took to get you there

Since I have started studying to take the CCNA, I've seen quite a few guys on twitter that I follow talk about Python. There have been some others, but Python is mainly what I see mentioned more often than not.

Also, just to add to the conversation. Most of the people I listen to and read online, who know trends in the IT field, those who teach certifications, have said, do not pigeon hole yourself into a specific vendor/sector of IT. Unless you are going to become an expert at one. For example CCIE. Don't just get a CCNA and coast. Get a CCNA, and branch out into other sys admin technologies such as mx, virtualization, security. Become a jack of all trades, or a top expert at one or two. Don't go entry level and coast.

Fun fact, you can obtain a VCP in network virtualization from VMware as a CCNA without having to take a course. Once you get that, you can take other VCP exams without the course requirement.

However, this will require some experience with VMware NSX virtual networking but in doing so, you're going to need to learn the fundamentals of virtualization.

You sure about that? Three years ago I consulted on a production storage array installation for a hospital which was a three month project. Their Epic systems data lived on these arrays. I was not required to have a HIPAA cert.

I’m guessing your referring to the security vendor and not this remote access gateway thing... No, never done any business with that outfit.. Are you looking to utilize some services they offer?
