A/C cost point of reference help...

So I have a 12 year old Carrier HVAC package unit (one of those big blocky things) 57,000 BTU (my research tells me this is 4.5 tons - but I have very little workable knowledge on the subject) that has needed repair costs that I have been given an estimate of $4K ish for. This unit heats/cools the downstairs part of my house which is a 80 yr. old pier and beam structure.
Duct work is modern, I would guess about 12 years old and probably dates to when current unit (brand is Carrier) was installed (I have lived her 5 years). I have no idea how to guage if install is difficult or not, but seems as if it would be pretty straight forward.
Any idea what I should be paying for this job? Quote I got was $19K for the mot "efficient" unit or $15K for I guess the regular one - brand is American Standard, not sure of SEER rating(?), because I don't have estimate on paper yet. Company has very good reputation here, but I don't know if this is like buying a car and I need to negotiate or what. What I do know is that after seeing that number, I'm getting another estimate.
Any help is appreciated. And I'm prepared for the OT's standard response (about tree-fiddy, 350, three-fifty, etc).

Pay somebody to get it sized properly. The factories seem to allow any slap dick to rep these days and they will carte blanche replace a 2 ton with a 2 ton without evening questioning any other ASHRAE standard or guidance.

I paid $6,850 for a 5 Ton Rheem installed. I never understand these $19K type quotes. I must be missing something.
There was a dude on here a few weeks ago that was quoted over $400 for a pan.

This is not a diy kind of job imo. It’s worth it to get it right. Will save you money over the long run. My BIL helped me with mine but he knows what he’s doing.

Paid roughly that for a 5 ton Trane heat pump (identical to American Standard both owned by Ingersoll Rand) last year.

I’m not an AC guy, but for 19k,they better be changing out EVERYTHING. Duct work included.

Yeah that sounds high as giraffe pussy to me. I assume this is the attic unit too.

You have a packaged rooftop or is your unit a vertical unit that sits outside and is ducted through the wall?
Does changing out the unit require a crane perhaps, but even do 19K is through the roof.

What needs repair? I just bought a 4 ton condenser for $1100 and paid one of my techs cash to replace it for another $200. I had a bad compressor. R-410a to 410a. You are looking at about $2500 if paying someone to buy and install.
What is refrigerant on old unit? R22? R410a operates at much higher pressures and new units will be R410a. Will need to flush or replace your refrigerant lines.
If the fan coil unit is the issue is, is it coupled with an electric heater or is it gas heat?
You can replace the inside or outside separate from each other.
How long you plan on living in the house. Short term go lower SEER rating long term look into higher SEER
12 year old duct work should be OK as long as you changed filters regularly. 30+ year old ductwork is a different story.

Just get window units

Also, rule of thumb is 400 square foot for each ton. More tonnage if older with bad insulation or if a lot of windows. But do not oversize for the sake of cooling faster. The unit only removes humidity out of the air when running. Oversizing leads to stuffy houses.

Just paid $7000 for carrier 5 ton heat pump. 15 seer inside and outside units

Be prepared by $2K per ton
In your case, you'd be looking at $9000 for a new unit

I was quoted 6500 for a 4 ton not terribly long ago including install. I hear these 15-20 quotes and I wonder what I’m missing.. I ended up keeping furnace and and paid 4+ for outside and inside coils

Sits on the ground outside the house - comes in under the pier and beam structure.

May indeed require some device to lift old unit out, place new unit in due to positioning of the old unit and a set of stairs.

Both units? Man ac quotes always seem all over the place. I'll hear one person say 7k and another 18.

Similar to the OP, I replaced a 4 ton package unit last year for 5750 installed.
Package unit should be cheaper then a split.
