In being successful in America today?
Gonna have to go with confidence. Seems like you can often get away with being stupid if you’re really sure of yourself.

General intelligence, known as “g”, and measured by IQ tests by a landslide. General intelligence/IQ is a robust predictor of income/earnings/Financial success, job advancement, employment, health and disease, poverty, crime, incarceration, successful parenting, welfare, illegitimate births, Educational achievement, and much more.

Confidence. Some of the most ambitious and financially successful people I’ve known were not very smart, but confident as hell. I’m talkng misuse of words because they don’t know the meaning, poor spelling and grammar, ignorance about worldly topics, pursuit of business opportunities with no regard for the possibility of failure, and just flat out not very smart. Sometimes I think higher intelligence actually impedes success because smart people look at every angle and talk themselves out of risky moves.

You really need a balance because a confident idiot will make bad decisions.
Someone with intelligence who lacks confidence will just hold themselves back although they have the ability to make things happen.
In general, you can make up for intelligence with confidence (to some degree), but there can't be huge imbalance of the two.

well, if you're confident you can fly but not intelligent enough not to try.

Confidence in Louisiana. Much more split everywhere else.
Lived in Northeast for four years. People don't care who you are or where you are from. Intelligence is equal to confidence, if not greater. People will even overpay if you can get the job done right the first time. You can't fake it.
In Louisiana, people want to do business with people they like doing business with. That's not necessarily wrong, just a difference in culture. People make a lot of money this way. But, when a recurring problem is crippling your biz, bottom line, sales, whatever...you're stuck with your baw instead of the "smartest guy in the room."

You can get by with average intelligence if you have confidence.
The only way you can get by with being stupid/lazy is if you "know someone".

Communication skills.
I can't tell you how many intelligent people I've seen who don't have the ability to communicate their ideas effectively.
You can get places with confidence, but confidence without competence is a house built on sand.
