Shaquille Dukes from Chicago was simply following doctor’s orders when he went for a walk and met two friends outside of the hospital in Freeport. However, things escalated when a security guard accused him of trying to steal the IV machine he was hooked up to.

Come to Freeport on Vacation and leave on Probation. This is truly one of the most racist cities in America. I was admitted into the hospital for double pneumonia, after receiving doctors orders to walk around, I was stopped by an overzealous, racist, security officer, who claimed that I "was trying to leave the hospital to sell the IV equipment on eBay". After a brief conversation, the guard called the police, I was advised by Sgt. Jeff Zalaznik, badge number 116, that I was being arrested for attempted theft, of the IV equipment that was clearly attached to my arm. My brother was arrested, and then me. Under the direction of Sgt Zalaznik, officers stood by and watched while my IV was removed on the sidewalk, and it was NOT by a doctor. I told the Sgt I was being treated for pneumonia and asthma, and his words were "I don't care why you're here, you're going to jail". They took my rescue inhaler and began to transport me to the city lockup, while in transit I began to have a seizure, and subsequently am asthma attack, I pleaded with officers for almost 4 minutes to retrieve my inhaler from the transporting officer, and finally, when I became unresponsive, it miraculously appeared. I make this post not for pity, but as a beacon of hope for all black and brown minorities dealing with the City of Freeport, we do not have to take this shite any longer! I've shared contact info for a great attorney who is ready and willing to intervene. This ends today, anyone who sees this, and has been served an injustice or was a victim of a crime initiated by Freeport PD, please reach out.

If this is true, thats fricked up. And those who accused the patient for stealing need to be fired. I wouldn't want that kind of judgement on my force.

If I just had a seizure, I would go for the benzo over the inhaler, unless I was in a post-ictal state, at which time I would probably be intubate. Sounds shady.

This makes me think there is a more to the story than just what he is saying.

Something does not add up in this story.
Unless there is more to this story that we don't know. Stories like these, there seems to be info that doesn't get reported.

Walking around means doing laps around the hospital unit, mobilize early to prevent a dvt, etc. It doesn’t mean meet up with you friends and walk outside.

Don't you get charged by the hospital for the IV bag when they hook it up?
ETA: My bad. He took the electronic monitor with him.

Walk outside with IV equipment, the hospital calls the police. SOP in every hospital in America.

I saw this story on the news recently.
Not that I've looked much into the story, but I can't seem to figure out exactly how far away from the hospital was the pt when this all went down.
There's a difference between having off the floor orders and heading down to the hospital cafeteria/just outside the hospital doors etc vs walking down a few blocks away from the hospital.
You occasionally have pts who try to leave with their IV in place(easy drug access). So certainly can be a concern if someone is walking a ways from the hospital with an IV pole and IV access.

You sure that SOP doesn’t include a “hey mind coming back in?!?” before 911? Cause it should.

Why couldn't his friends go INSIDE the hospital?
Why was he rolling the IV out of it?
The cop was stupid but this kid wasnt being conscientious of his actions.

Story fails to mention he got into an altercation with hospital staff prior to getting stopped by the security guard. Convenient

Yeah I bet if he got outside and passed out , hit his head then he would sue for that . That double pneumonia is twice as bad as single pneumonia or walking pneumonia.
