I think it was used to illustrate the tough, survival of the fittest, nature of the west. It was called Meal Ticket and the orator guy was dumped for a counting chicken. Maybe its about quality art getting shoved aside for whatever sells the most.

How many people noticed in All Gold Canyon when the prospector is going for the owl's eggs and asks "How high can a bird count, anyway?" (reference to the counting chicken).

The whole movie was an inquiry into the meaning of life, with it’s fleeting successes, and the struggle against almost unbearable suffering.
The Coen’s films are as deep as you’re willing to dive. Notice the poems read by the quadriplegic orator in the Liam Neeson vignette, particularly Ozymandias.
It’s a fantastic film, IMO, and just as unique as you’ve come to expect from the Coens.
Did no one else like the story about the caravan of settlers with the young lady and the the cowboy trail hand?

I loved it right up until the ending. It was just completely heartbreaking. It ruined my whole night. Would it have killed them to make it a bitter sweet ending instead of just straight aour?
