Sad what Hollywood has become.

That is hilarious. Who downvoted that?

I mean, I’ve seen all but toy story 4 and they’re all watchable.

Looks like Will Smith got confused as to which movie he was supposed to be in.

There are tons of fantastic and indie low budget films being produced in Hollywood with big name actors
But the general public does not want that. But it doesn’t stop you from consuming it

The only one I've seen is "Men In Black." Yeah, it was watchable, but barely. I thought it was pretty boring and had no creativity. OHOH, it seems like most movies these days are boring and lack creativity.

And I really don't think the consumer is to blame for shite like TLJ and Lesbian Ghostbusters. Literally no one was crying out for that.

So all movies made outside of the big studios are crusader movies? Do you not actually watch anything besides Alex Jones? Go watch a movie before you bitch about it. What's the crusade in High Life? Or in High Flying Bird? Or in The Mustang? Or in Gloria Bell? Or even Booksmart? Half of those star and focus on white males -- ya know, that thing you likely claim can't exist in movies anymore.

I think it’s a combination of both. Audiences have shown Hollywood that they’ll pay to go see all these sequels, remakes, and other cookie cutter big budget movies. And Hollywood has decided to take less risks and put fewer resources into new and original ideas that may or may not work out.

quote:You have no idea whatsoever what I "likely claim" and I didn't say shite about white guys. I said that the originality is dead in major films. It is, and there's no way crap like TLJ and SJW Ghostbusters were a response to audience outcry. They were basically an excuse for having no original thought, posing as activism and intended to browbeat anyone who didn't like them with "_____-ist" epithets and other familiar whining.

And judging by fan reaction whenever some new sequel/remake is announced, it's clear that these projects aren't the result of consumer input. They're easy and require no originality, which is good, because they don't have any.

If we’re talking bigger budget movies($75M+) then I totally agree with you there. Unless your name is Nolan or Tarantino...

If I’m paying $40 to watch something in a theatre, I want a big budget blockbuster that is using the sound/visual tech to its fullest potential.
I save the great indie screenplays for Netflix and other streaming services

You seem to be paying at least three times what I do.

There is no feminism in Ghostbusters. There's no messaging in TLJ. There's capitalism. Adding women or people of different color broadens appeal to a new demographic. Disney doesn't care about your identity politics. It cares about more money. This is reaction to Twitter reactions, not the actual movies. Same with Booksmart. "Girls party after studying a lot in high school. Having no experience, hijinks ensue." That's not a crusade. Reacting to the filmmaker's Twitter presence should not inform your perception of the content.
That said, I get that social media reactions are so loud and annoying that it's hard to not dislike the films people yell so much about. I wasn't responding to this. I was responding to the idiotic dismissal of smaller films.
Looking at the top grossing films of each decade, sequels and remakes have been going strong for a long time. Ben-hur and The Ten Commandments are both remakes that dominated the box office in the 50s. And then you have to really stretch the definition of "originality" to give Hollywood producers any credit. The majority of the top grossing films from each decade were based on well-established properties. I also long for more originality in film, but now, as it has always been with the movies, that originality is found in smaller films. Even Star Wars, the little film that became one of the most successful films of all time, is totally cribbed from Dune and The Hidden Fortress.

The people financing this entertainment are the same Weinsteins and Moonveses who get busted for being raging womanizers. They're in it for the money.
