Trump to force Hospitals to disclose their prices

Huge news in a growing set of policies to bring transparency and force prices lower
President Trump is planning a series of marquee actions on health care that coincide with his re-election campaign, part of an effort to gain ground on the issue while Democratic presidential candidates debate how far to go in expanding federal coverage.
Mr. Trump on Monday plans to issue an executive order aimed at forcing the disclosure of the hidden prices that insurers, hospitals and doctors negotiate for care. It would direct federal agencies to issue guidance and regulations.
Health-care changes are already in the works. Hospitals are deeply concerned about an outpatient rule expected in July because it could mandate first-ever disclosure of prices starting next year, according to two people familiar with the regulation.
What policies should the Trump administration pursue to try to lower health-care costs? Join the conversation below.
Other federal rules aimed at lower drug prices are looming, including a plan to reduce seniors’ out-of-pocket costs by curbing rebates to middlemen. Another would limit Medicare drug prices by linking them to lower costs in other countries.

I'd be okay with this
When I worked for a couple of different hospital as an inventory controller when I was younger some of the mark ups were ludicrous.
Saline solution - 7$ per bottle, hospital charging $60
Hospital admittance kit - $14 per kit, hospital charging $100.00
Package of sterile gauzes - $2-3 per pack, hospital charged $25
Those were just some I can remember off the top of my head, but catheter and syringes were crazy 500% markups and higher as well. Blew my mind when I first started working how much we overpay for basic stuff.
Hospital charged $6.75 for this toothbrush and our cost to buy a whole case was like .09 cents per unit
Good for Trump on this.

But what do they charge for the nurses time, what do they charge for plant operations staff that keep the hospital running, what do they charge for housekeeping and dietary staff? There are SO MANY cost to running a healthcare facility that you have to mark up items that you can charge for or you will go broke.

Price disclosure is brilliant. Price controls are dangerous. It will be fun to watch critics rush to this thread to pretend they are the same thing.

Next, Trump needs to force CMS to post the reimbursement rates.
Then, hospitals should post all of the freebies they have to give away from non payers.
Then, maybe it'll make sense to everyone why that aspirin costs the average "payer" $25.

Trump to force Hospitals to disclose their prices
I've been saying this for a while.
quote:
Pricing Transparency.
Patients should be able to determine who is charging what for a particular service. Additionally, as unbelievable as it may seem, healthcare providers often haven't the slightest clue as to what particular drugs or products cost. Where practical, every product in the medical workplace should be price tagged. You'd be amazed at the difference that would make. Consumer options 101!

Add Breast pumps to this too... wife (no pics) got one through her insurance for our daughter (no pics) and bill sent to insurance was $495 + tax. Same exact pump at walmart was $55.

There is never a reason to not have price transparency.

I have had this discussion with friends who are doctors. They explain that the markups are to subsidize the people who are getting free care. Lots of folks with no insurance use the ER as their doctor's office.
If you really wanted to bring prices down then change the laws so that hospitals could reject non paying ER patients. They could just point them to the nearest vacant lot to go die. Harsh? Perhaps.

This is great.
I’m sure they’ll try to game the system.
But if I’m having gall bladder surgery, I should be able to know that my out of pocket costs at St Luke’s will be $750 and at Missouri Baptist it will be $1050 and then make my mind up based on the quality of the hospital.

There are already competitive pricing battles between some facilities and some doctors. It's good for the market.
