I’m so happy he left because I want him to succeed. The best experience he will ever get will be in either the G-League or in the NBA. Out-physicalling a bunch of college kids does him no good. As an LSU Alumni who took classes with these kids, I’ll always care about the student athlete and his future over the success of the amateur program.

Who is the biggest League success vs the best Sophomore coming out of college?

He definitely could have improved his draft stock playing better his sophmore year.

And he is pretty raw. There is a lot of things he could easily improve in college.

The G-league is full of MEN better than the kids in college. And he’ll get paid while getting better. It might be hard for you to understand but this kid’s future will be much better by leaving amateur athletics.

Aren’t most consensus high school 5 star basketball players almost always first round locks after one year?

Not wrong. The only way he gets into the first round is if he really showed out at the NBA draft combine. Outside of that he is a second rounder. He has a lot of upside, he has a lot he can improve on, so yea, he will be a steal in the 2nd half.

Wouldn't hate to see the Pels take him in the second round.

LOL...For those of us in School with Shaq, he was a normal kid with a normal vehicle and budget.

Leaving early will ultimately cost him millions down the road. He has zero upper body strength and at times still thinks he’s a point guard. I most certainly wish him well and will cheer for his success but he should’ve stayed at a minimum of one more year.

He showed little last year that indicated he should be a first round pick.

I think he was just one of those kids that made up his mind to be a one and done, the coaches planned for it and it was expected all along.

His stock dropped as the year went but he never considered staying.

Whether it was a mistake or not, you'd have to have him live two lives to find out. But I don't think a second year was ever a thought in his mind. And I don't think just because he slipped to the second round gave him second thoughts at all.

Players like Naz Reid are never going to stay more than one year because he didn’t want to stay past one year. The only reason he came for one year is because he had very limited options. It’s not the player’s fault it’s the NBA. They are using college basketball to basically be a free low level minor league so they don’t have to go into high school gym’s or AAU tournaments anymore.

I hope they allow the G league to start taking players out of high school. It will skim off the top those true one and dones. Yes you would still have some but that would be guys that came to college thinking they may stay for a couple seasons for the most part and blew up as freshman. The ones that have no desire of playing basketball for more than one year would go away.

I don’t like that way either but at least it’s better than what we have now. Personally I think basketball should set up a true minor league system like MLB and the college baseball rule should be taken. You can go pro after high school but if you go to college you have to stay at least 3 years or until you’re 21.

That's fine, but be willing to accept college basketball becoming nearly as irrelevant as college baseball.

Starting this upcoming season the G-league will be able to offer select $125k contracts to HS players wishing to skip college. However, the question is "will that be enough?" It sounds like a lot on the surface until you realize a player will have to pay many of his own expenses out of that $125k vs. having all of that taken care of in college. Also, the G-league isn't exactly a luxurious lifestyle. You're not playing in front of packed houses on national TV. You also aren't taking chartered flight to every away destination. Couple that with the fact that many big time college prospects are already getting paid significant money (albeit under the table). You could argue that it's MORE lucrative to play one year of college basketball. I can promise you that Zion and his family received more financial benefit by attending Duke vs. playing for the Fort Wayne Fire Ants.

I agree that the one-and-done rule should be abolished. But the removal of that rule can be meshed with the new CBB eligibility rules to make CBB better. If you are truly good enough to be a 1st round pick out of HS then have at it. Great for you. But (and I think the NCAA is taking steps to do this) allow those fringe guys to test the NBA waters but still choose to go to college if they are just not quite ready.

I think what you will find is about 10 or so guys a year will be true 1 and dones. Someone like Reid would have likely ended up in college anyway because while he maybe felt he was good enough, the market would have answered that question for him right away.

He’s not who he thinks he is. He struggled mightily at times.
