Looking to buy an AR 15. Best economical option?

Looking to buy an entry level ar. I’ve had a few people tell me to stay away from some of the lower level ones like the Ruger 556. Is this pretty accurate? Any of the cheaper versions worth buying?

What special tools are needed to assemble one yourself?

none if you can't build an ar with what you own you are not human I would insult you and say you are not a man but most women have the tools to build and AR

Buy kit from Palmetto State Armory.

You'll spend more upfront if you go the route of building an entry level AR after you factor in the costs of tools. You can do it with minimum amount but its just like any other project, the right tools make all the difference. Something like AR-Armor's Kit gives you an idea of what you might need to start. IT can be done with less like a good pin punch set but the nice thing about an AR is once you build one you really know how it works and how to clean it. I'd say it's a labor of love to build and maintain them. Go right and get the tools specific for the task and have fun

Look at youtube, there are assembly videos, some punches make it a little easier, but you can build with common household tools

How many women do you know with roll pin punch set and torque wrenches?

Smith & Wesson M&P15 sport 2.
Put about 1800 rounds through it within the last month or so. Absolutely love that thing.

Does anyone here actually own the Ruger 556?

I got one at academy with a 75 off sale and brought it down to about $525.
You can beat that with a bat. Will last forever. Good barrel and triggger too.
Cheaper than a polymer pistol witch blows my mind.

Some retard on AR15.com? No, Ruger hammer-forges their own barrels and they are quality rifles overall. Those, S&W M&P rifles, RRA, Springfield...all solid brands. Don't build an AR until you've owned one or two and have a high degree of familiarity with the platform. They aren't hard to assemble but a small screwup means big problems.

Found one at a pawn shop last year and got lucky. $400.

I own the Ruger. Never had any problem with it!

I third the PSA option. Find an assembled lower and an assembled upper you like and never look back. You can piece together a really nice rifle with full length rails, sights, BCG and virtually whichever buttstock you'd like for $500-$600 if that's your budget.

I’ve built a couple. My first one I Built I was a virgin. Never owned one before and never done anything like that. But I’m pretty handle and willing to learn. I had about 1k in that one I had a 3-9x40 on it and used it deer hunting. The most recent one I built to keep in the back seat of the truck and I built it for about 330 bucks. Goes bang every time you pull the trigger.

Man some people are snobs about AR rifles. To them if you dont build it you're a hapless idiot.
I've shot a ruger 556, M&P sport, I own a colt expanse. They all go bang and shoot good groups, I'm not sure what else an entry AR is supposed to do.

+1
Whoever said the Ruger ARs are crap is an idiot. It's one of the best bang-for-buck entry ARs out there.
As many have mentioned, the M&P15 Sport 2 & AR556 are two of the most popular ones out there for a reason.
Having said that, I still think it would be wise to pony up an extra $100 for a new trigger after you purchase the rifle. The Larue MBT, anything Geissele, or the Rock River National Match 2-stage trigger are all good buys.
