They're so pissed that he went to a shitty-run team in a small market. It's obvious he should have gone to shitty-run team in New York City instead.

I love this non sequitur:

quote:

The New Orleans Pelicans—who had a six percent chance of winning the lottery—will get the number-one pick in the 2019 Draft, and if the career of Anthony Davis so far is any indication, that’s bad news for Zion.

quote:

The Pelicans drafted Davis seven years ago, and even though he’s become a top-five NBA stud in that time

Pelicans fans have barely tasted the kind of misery that can only be relieved by the hope that comes from a player of Zion’s talents. That team deserves to spend half a decade wandering in the NBA’s hinterlands, churning out grueling 22-win seasons. The organization is as crummy as the Knicks, but without the pathos. They’re as small-time as the Grizzlies, but without the diehards. They’re as doomed as the Kings, but without the pluck. They’re as irrelevant as the Hawks, but with a fraction of the promise. Zion will be fun wherever he goes, but he deserves better than the Pelicans, and the league would’ve been in better shape if just about any other team had landed at the top of the lottery. Whoever’s in charge of rigging the NBA needs to rig harder, dammit.

They have been trashing the Pels since the AD/Lakers fiasco. They are extremely butthurt over them not succumbing to a trade demand from a guy still under contract for another year and a half. Even their suck arse commenters were telling them to chill at one point

The Pelicans have been run horribly for years now.

Luck into the two best players in the last ten years and suck. I doubt Williamson will change the course or a team that disappoints year after year.

The Pels made it to the wc semis last year after sweeping a current WCF team

The Knicks and Lakers haven't been to the playoffs IN 6 frickING YEARS

But hey New Orleans is clearly the worst run franchise of all three and should be shat upon accordingly.

As a Celtics fan, I'm butthurt about it. Actually very jealous. Ainge has been trying to get a franchise player with great trades, but just can't crack into the upper echelon. The Pels have fallen arse backwards twice into generational talents.

Grayed comments

quote:

Yeah, weird article. Instead of being upset that a team successfully tanked to get Zion, we’re now upset that it’s working as intended? That was exactly the point to the new changes, to discourage tanking! New Orleans has awful management, but so do the rest of the teams in the top 4.

quote:

I still fail to see why the Pelicans are the bad guys in this whole AD drama.

quote:

Because they interfered with the narrative that sportswriters had created about Davis joining the Lakers and creating a super-team.

quote:

“Bloo bloo bloo I’m a big stupid baby and I’m crying cuz Zion isn’t going to where I want him to go, change all the rules or I’ll poop in my diaper” That’s what you sound like

quote:

By the end of this next season we’ll start seeing reports about how Zion has a home in LA and some business interests there and will definitely end up in a Lakers uniform by the end of his contract unless he forces a trade to the Lakers before then because his agent will of course be Rich Paul, who also represents LeBron James in case you didn’t know that.

quote:

Lol Small markets have enough problems, they don’t need you encouraging rigging so that the destinations that free agents already want to go to have even more of an edge. F—- the Knicks they don’t deserve Zion, at least not until they can be half as respectable as the NY NBA team everyone loves to forget about. The Lakers won the LBJ “lottery” and were so dysfunctional that they look borderline worse than they were before (they’re not, but not by lack of effort by the FO & ownership). Memphis would’ve been boring, but they needed a top 2 pick. As not a NOP fan I can tell you that I’m not unhappy with how this turned out, especially with the entitlement about this pick that the Knicks fans have. Y’all are probably getting KD & Kyrie despite how godawful your ownership is so R-E-L-A-X.

quote:

At least Deadspin is consistent with their trash takes on this.

quote:

Setting aside the plantation mentality that a player-draft is based upon (it’s all bad and should be run like European soccer), I don’t know why the Pelicans are so much worse than say, the Knicks. The Knicks are a horribly run organization. The Lakers (recently) are a horribly run organization. I don’t know why it’s such a forgone conclusion that these locations are “better”. They’re all owned by petty, failson billionaires that inherited their money. I see why the media has an interest for Zion to play in a large market, but the “this is bad for him as a person” stuff is kind of ridiculous.

quote:

Which is it? Are you for lousy teams getting better? Or are you for smiting lousy teams for being lousy? You can’t have it both ways.

quote:

Hey, the Pelicans won the Lotto. I wonder if Deadspin is salty AF. *checks* It is. Wow. It so is!

quote:

This article has all the juicy trimmings of a coastal elitist, save the hot take on the tech bubble.

quote:

So you’re saying Zion should have gone to the Lakers or the Knicks? Two teams who also quite clearly fricking suck? Ok, got it.

quote:

I don’t understand Deadspin’s continuing beef with the Pelicans. As others have pointed out, most of the teams in the top 10 have incompetent management. The Lakers are every bit as incompetent but seem to think they deserve to be good because they are the Lakers, and for some reason the basketball media seems to agree. As a fan of a small market team, this annoys me to no end. Their advantages are myriad, we don’t need to just turn good players over for 50 cents on the dollar because they say so. Further, they suck at identifying and developing talent. Why should the rest of the league help them out there? Also, you all seem to despise the idea of AD to the Celtics, even though the Celtics are one of the most competently run basketball operations in the league and have spent years executing a strategy that balances their short and long-term outlooks. They are much more deserving of a player like AD than the Lakers, if competent management is the measuring stick. This frustrates me because I hate the Celtics! Do people forget that the Pelicans last year DEMOLISHED one of he teams in the WC finals this year? Don’t know what happened to the Pelicans this year but at this point, with a competent executive, their future appears as bright as any team in the league. If Anthony Davis wants to go elsewhere, he can go anywhere he wants next year. He could have done so a few years ago. Yes, the system is structured so he may have to give up compensation, but how many people have taken pay cuts to get a better work situation? I sympathize with labor, but you guys are grasping at straws here.

I love Deadspins response to the popularity boom of Barstool, moar shitty political posts, like that's somehow going to bring back readers like me.

Also, kudos to the guy saying the draft is plantation based, and supporting the capitalistic form of player acquisitions.

Pels better enjoy the 4 years of Zion, cause he aint staying past that.

Kid was pissed, but I can't blame him. New Orleans is a fun town for a week, but I would not want to live there.
