Trying to figure out the best route for those of you who have made the trip before, my first time driving there. 10 west then 290 out of Houston? Any major speed traps to be aware of? Thanks in advance.

I've always gone 10 west to highway 71. I don't know if its any better or worse, but that's one boring drive past houston.

290 is ok with the exception of going through Elgin and Giddings. 71 has more stretches of 75 speed limit but you’ll have a longer time on I-10 through Houston. 290 is roughly 10 miles shorter.

71 is much better - 290 has more speed traps and more traffic signals

I-10 to highway 71

The route on 290 has more speed traps, lower speeds and at times you are on a 2 lane non-divided road.

On 71 you are cruising 75+ the whole way except when you pass Hruskas.

I live in Austin and will only take this route. I have made this drive more times than I can remember.

It's really more about when you're getting to Austin, if you are going central/north or south, and if you'll hit rush hour traffic.

Do NOT take 71 if you're arriving at rush hour and trying to get to central Austin or the UT campus. I live in North Austin and never take 71 really.

The difference in the drive is negligible really...

Yeah, that one is in Bastrop.
I-10 to 71 is definitely the better route.
There’s one speed trap in Ellinger along 71, near the Hruska’s Bakery (decent kolaches there too)

10 to 610 to 10 to 71

If traffic is a nightmare on 10 and you can at least get as far as beaumont you can take 287 to FM 943 to Livingston and 190 and reroute around Houston on grand parkway then 290.

They speed trap all the way down 290. Cruise control is your friend.

If you're going to 190 in Livingston then you might as well keep going to Huntsville and take 30 to B/CS then 21 to 290 into Austin.

If you want to do Grand Parkway you'd be better off taking 105 out of Beaumont to Cleveland, then 69 to the Grand Parkway to 290.

You might as well stay on 10 to 71 rather than diverting to Livingston and then back tracking all the way back to north Houston.

Holy shite I thought we'd never get to Austin. I hope I never have do it again! I have a friend that drives from Austin to Thibodaux about at least once a month, God bless him

That sounds right. Im just used to coming in from north of beaumont so I always wonder what alt route I’d take if I went down 10 and got boned by traffic somewhere between LC and beaumont.

Go clockwise:

I-10 to 71 when heading west from Houston to Austin
290 when heading east from Austin to Houston

They are about the same if it is not rush hour...
