I lived in Austin for a few years and would make this drive fairly regularly for holidays/LSU games. I preferred 290 because by the time I get to Houston I’m sick of straight shot interstate with no scenery.

I-10 to 71 is the fastest way to the southern side of ATX but a detour through Luling for some City Market BBQ is highly recommended.

You'd be pretty boned at that point no matter what. There aren't a lot of great options for diverting between LC and Beaumont.

71 is the better option most of the time, unless you're going to N or E Austin then 290 is the better option. Use a GPS app and it should tell you the best route to your destination.

Really is only about a 10 minute difference depending on traffic. Again, where in Austin you're trying to go may make all the difference really. 290 brings you in north, 71 brings you in south.

"I don't know if its any better or worse, but that's one boring drive past houston."
Not nearly as boring as the drive from Beaumont to Houston

No way. Houston has expanded so far east now that there really isn't much dead space between Beaumont and Houston.
25 years ago I might have agreed with you.

It all depends upon whether you like kolaches and beef jerky..and of course BBQ.

Have my driver head up I-110 north to the Harding exit east then take left on to Merle Gustafson Dr. then a right on Chuck Yeager. Pick a parking spot closest to the door to the hanger and walk straight to the PJ.

Fastest way is 10 west onto 71. The drive on 290 is more boring anyway

Skip going to Austin. The aggies will tell you everything about Austin sucks, and playing a non-SEC team is a waste of time.
If you want the best of Texas, just go to College Station and watch the game on TV. CS has 5* Michelin Restaurants, world class museums, and is really the epicenter of culture for our great state.

From Alexandria I go up to Natchitoches and take HWY 6 across Toledo Bend to Texas 21, the. to TX 103 through Lufkin to TX 7, Back on TX 21/190 from Crockett through Bryan then to Austin.
It’s a scenic drive, not boring, and depending on Houston traffic it’s actually faster sometimes.
Just an option for anyone not wanting to be on an interstate all day...

I-10 West to US 71, at Columbus then through LaGrange and on to Austin.
Don't go 290 through Houston. There's lots of construction and it may be closed on the weekends.

Interesting detour. Seems a little long, but I like that TX 21 route through Nacogdoches, Crockett, Bryan-College Station, etc.

I take 28 through Leesville, come out by Jasper.
