Both are probably going to get healthy just in time for summer ball.

I doubt it happens, but if we won the first two games against Auburn with Walker and Marceaux going somewhat deep, do you throw the midweek assortment on Saturday and hope for the best (or willingly accept a possible L) in order to save Hilliard for game one of the SEC tourney?

I don't think LSU has the luxury of saving anybody for anything. Need to win every game you possibly can. Let's assume Mainieri goes with Walker and Marceaux in games 1 and 2. If we have a chance to win those games then you are using Hess, Peterson, Fontenot, Hilliard (probably in that order). So, how many of those guys you need, how long you use them, all will factor into who starts Saturday.

On the flip side, if we are down by a good bit Thursday or Friday, then you see the midweek guys in that game, in order to try to give you the best chance to win Saturday. It sucks, but our depth isn't there. And I don't think you can come up with a concrete plan of what to do. The games will have to dictate that.

It would have been nice to see Henry and Hill each go two innings Tuesday to ease the blow, but it doesn't look like that is likely either.

That’s the way I’m reading it

Right now, Paul Mainieri said it’s “50/50” for Jaden Hill and Cole Henry to pitch in the SEC tournament — if #LSU gets past Tuesday.

I really hope Hilliard doesn’t have anything that lingers

Well that would be about fitting with how the season has gone. As it is right now we have enough quality pitching for 2 of these next 4 games. And that quality pitching is dependant on Walker and Marceaux having strong outings, which hasn't happened every week.

7 of our 20 pitchers are currently out: Cole Henry, Jaden Hill, Trent Vietmeier, Caleb Gilbert, A.J. Labas, Nick Storz, and Easton McMurray.

That leaves 13 pitchers available. Clay Moffitt, Will Ripoll, Aaron George, Chase Costello, Riggs Threadgill, and Rye Gunter are all basically "long relievers" or "emergency" pitchers in an SEC weekend series based on how they have been used and/or their stats. In other words, I don't think Mainieri "wants" to pitch any of them in an SEC series unless he doesn't have anyone else or the game is out of hand.

That leaves 7 pitchers. Zack Hess, Todd Peterson, and Devin Fontenot can probably be counted on for 3 innings each, whether that's 3 in 1 game or 1 in 3 games. The same probably goes for Matthew Beck although he's probably more of a middle relief guy whereas the other 3 are more back end guys.

That still leaves 15 innings for Landon Marceaux, Eric Walker, and Ma'Khail Hilliard. Personally, I don't think Hilliard is much different than Beck. I don't think you "want" to throw him more than 3 innings on the weekend whether that's 3 in 1 or 1 in 3. If that's the case, you have to hope to get 6 out of both Marceaux and Walker.

I would call Marceaux the #1 right now based simply on ability and his last outing. But, like others have said, I don't think he's getting moved up 2 days to Thursday. I'll agree with most everybody else and say that Walker and Marceaux will likely both be moved up a day to Thursday and Friday, respectively. If LSU wants to win all 3 games, I feel like it's pretty important for those 2 to pitch a combined 12 innings.

Thu - Walker
Fri - Marceaux
Sat - TBD

I apologize. I tuned in late to yesterday's game. Yep, Walker'll have to be ready.

I like the Moffit on Saturday talk.

Hell, hopefully we can let Hess come in after Walker on Thursday and lock up a win. (Hopefully he stays under 40 pitches or so) Then let Hess start game 1 for you in Hoover. I don't think that would be out of the question right? Hess came in yesterday and threw around 30-40 pitches. That was after throwing over the weekend, so it would be the same situation.

This leaves you with Hess going game 1 in hoover, Walker going game 2 in hoover, Marceaux going game 3 in Hoover, then we scramble.

Is there any chance to sneak into the #4 spot with a sweep this weekend?

Man, this season has been tough. I really want to see pitchers and hitters step up big here - flip a switch - and win 8 in a row and take the SEC Tournament Title. But it feels like a pipe dream even if Henry and Hill can pitch a little bit in the tournament.

Only if Mississippi State gets swept at home by 7-20 South Carolina.

Basically, no. The top 4 seeds are locked up. 4th is 3 games ahead of 5th right now.

Moffitt starting on Saturday is a good call given that it's senior day. I wasn't considering that.

Man, this season has been tough.
Last night as we were sitting in the Box I told my wife that attending games this season has been painful.

And that was after we had taken the lead with those 4 runs in the third inning.

CPM saying he wanted to throw Hillard yesterday, tells me he plans on throwing Hillard to open the SEC tournament on Tuesday.

So to get people at least something close to full rest, I'll go with:

Thurs - Walker
Fri - Marceaux
Sat - Pitch By Committee, with Fontenot going first (or Moffit in a senior day nod, especially if we win Fri and Sat)

Tues (SECT) - Hillard
Wed (SECT) - Walker
Thurs (SECT) - Henry/Hill (if available), if not, Marceaux
Fri (SECT - if we have to play Friday) - whoever did not pitch on Thurs, if none available, pitch by committee
Sat (SEC) - Whoever is left of Henry/Hill/Marceaux, if none available, pitch by committee
Sun (SEC) - Pitch by Committee

I think the goal would be to work up to, for regional:

Friday - Henry
Game 2 - Walker
Game 3 - Marceaux
Game 4 - Hillard
Game 5 - Hill / Fontenot

Based on everything being said by Paul, I would be utterly shocked if Henry was available to start Friday of the regional. Even if he is, we are looking at maybe 40-60 pitches? That would put our bullpen in a real tough spot starting game 1.

I think it is more likely we see:
Friday-Walker
Game 2-Marceaux
Game 3-Hilliard
Games 4/5 (if nec.) scramble.

The upshot is that we maybe be able to count on 2-3 innings from Henry/Hill under these circumstances (if they pitch in the SEC tourney).

We need 27 innings to advance. Take em anyway we can.

I'll disagree with you on the optimal regional rotation. I think Walker on Friday and Henry on Saturday is optimal. Marceaux in game 3. Hill or TBD after that.
