They weren't that good. They lost the California Bowl that year 7-37.

Arnsparger coughed up a serious hair ball with that loss. I watched a YouTube of that game, and LSU played as poorly as a team could possibly play. And this came on the heels of a huge upset of A&M.

----the fights after the game ended is the highlight of that video. There are a few videos of that horrible loss on youtube.
