I'm moderately encouraged by reading that Tommy Moffit singled out Deculus for his off-season work thus far. The big man possesses prototypical size for a tackle; size and frame we haven't seen at that position since ... La'el or Whitworth IMO.

He was consistently the weakest link in the offensive line last year (Charles also played poorly, but his highs were far more frequent than Deculus from what I saw), and after running into him at BWW's the day after he got abused at Florida by a defensive line chalked with to-be NFL guys, he had the look on his face like "Come on man, I know that I sucked" when I tried to give him some positive reinforcement and encouragement going into the UGA game.

I guess what I am trying to say there is that he is a self-aware person.

The potential for this guy is so huge, and I have no doubt that if this season turns out to be the one of our dreams, he will have to be a beast.

A lot of moaning and groaning about our tackles being guards forced into the position, but here we have a 6'7, 320 lb. cornbread fed Texan who could be a huge piece to our puzzle. Would love to see him succeed and assert himself as the player he could be and the player this team needs.

I'm not an OL expert by any stretch. But, does he possess the "quickness" for the position.

I am sure that can be "improved" upon by working on it. But, I'm just unsure of how much.

I'll cheer like hell for whoever is in the game and I wish him great success

That is encouraging to me as well. Many keep talking about Austin Deculus losing his job, but that just will not happen. RT is a weak spot and we don't have anyone that I would feel comfortable with so might as well hope AD has improved.

I remember him being a step slow last year, so I am hoping that improved lateral quickness (and hand strength, naturally) is part of the reason for Moffitt's comments.

His quickness was the issue last year. He got burned on the edge.

That is the question. He's shown the strength in the weight room and he's in shape. But does he have the foot speed, punch and agility to handle DEs and speed rushers? He's one of the highest rated OTs we've signed in a while, but that seems to be a very difficult position to evaluate.

I find sometimes with the offensive line your best players are not the five stars coming out of high school but rather the fourth and fifth year seniors who have been in a college weight lifting program four or five years.

There is just a lot of difference between most 18 yr olds and 22 yr olds in terms of strength and maturity.

Deculus will be a junior this year and I suspect wants to give the NFL a try, so its certainly possible that he had a strong off season working agility drills and lifting weights that he will be much improved.

Yep he underachieved last year so hopefully he's improving some with footwork & technique. He has the size.

And often times technique. A 6'7", 320 lb. guy is going to dominate at the high school level, period. He doesn't have to learn great technique because his size alone will allow him to dominate. So quite often you see guys like that struggle taking the next step until they improve technique-wise.

I'm encouraged by this as well. I've been critical of Deculus but it's never been personal. I'm pulling for him to get the footwork down and improve his speed. Apparently he's well aware of his shortcomings and is working to fix them. I feel a lot better about him moving forward now. Deculus LSU needs you to step up in a big way this fall. You and Charles both are probably the most important pieces of the offense in order to be successful.

I think experience is one of the most important things for an offensive line in college, more than any other position. Last year, due to heavy personnel losses and then a rash of injuries, a lot of guys got pushed into more playing time than they were probably ready for last season. That sucked for 2108, but should pay dividends for this season. This line has a lot of experienced players with even more depth all of a sudden. Should be a fierce competition for most jobs, which should push guys to be better.

I'm really excited for the line.

Was it a lack of athleticism or was he rushed into starting before he was ready due to a lack of upperclassmen.

Here's hoping the young man has improved his feet quickness/movement... seemed to be his biggest weakness. Glad he's improved his strength. Hope he becomes a big asset at tackle!

It's not like he was that young, he was a sophomore. His problem was quite clearly lack of feet. The dude just couldn't slide out quick enough to stop speed rushers. He's a natural left side (left handed) guy, he would be much better moved back over there.

Curious to see the competition for RT once fall heats up, I'd even expect Ingram to get a shot there. We cant just settle for Deculus like we did last year there, I kind of like this lineup if Ingram can be a better RT than Deculus:

LT: Charles
LG: Deculus
C: Cushenberry
RG: Lewis
RT: Ingram

Or if Traore steps it up, or they move Rosenthal over to RT from LT, who knows.

We all know he has the size and strength to play the position, the biggest thing I saw and by no means an expert, but he has serious issues with the speed rush. If he can keep those feet moving and get them in front of his guy, he's an absolute force. I had high hopes for the guy and I think Ed is getting them ready for the season. If not, it's going to be more of the same. We will beat 9/10 teams and struggle against the couple of teams that have a great dline.

I hope this is true, but it sure didn't show in the spring game.
