John Neff who used to play with the Drive-By Truckers is an amazing pedal steel player. He left and DBT has never been the same.

That's one instrument I've never been able to wrap my head around. It just looks impossibly hard to play.

Keyboard players/multi-instrumentalists often play bass pedals, too. I figure that's equivalent to pedal steel.
Heck, drummers are often doing 4 different things with 4 different limbs at the same time.

That's also incomprehensible. But at least the pedals are somewhat independent of what you're playing on the keyboard. The pedals on a pedal steel change the pitches of (some of) the notes you're playing. Then you have the knee bars things too.

And singing at the same time too. Yeah, totally agree.

Garcia was underrated without doubt. I didn't know that was him on that track.
I think Rusty Young with Poco was outstanding and underrated as well. Did straight up country riffs and could make it sound like a Latin/Jazz or Blues organ.
1. Honky Tonk Downstairs (County)
2. Just In Case It Happens/Grand Junction/Consequently So Long (County and Rock)
3. Don't Let It Pass By (1st half of medley)
4. Nobody's Fool/El Tonto de Nadie, Regresa (2nd half of medley)
This medley is a little hard to characterize. Starts slow and mellow emphasizing vocals and changes genres, tempos and beats throughout keeping an organ sounding bluesy Latinized pedal steel background throughout. It's long and I've seen it done live and there's no organ only the pedal steel imitating one plus going in and out with the pedal steel doing pedal steel riffs as well.
5. Anyway Bye Bye (Blues)

I had a lap steel, and even that was hard for me.
My cousin tried it for the first time and just killed it, never had touched one before. I just gave it to him.

I have one and I can play it a little but yeah even that's pretty hard. Huge respect for guys like David Lindley that can really master those instruments.

Ralph Mooney - The foot that made Merle Haggard famous.
He also was Waylon Jennings' steel player in the Waylors.
ETA: Garcia was the steel player on CSN&Y's "Teach Your Children"

Look up Herbie Wallace. Ron Franklin is a monster. Also, can't think of his name right now but the guy playing with Lady GaGa right now is killer also. My Dad worked with him when he was 16 in Donna Fargo's band.

No problem. Poco's was unequivocally the best live concert performance I ever attended.

Without question. Amazing band to see live. Discovered them opening for a Black Crowes show back in the day and I was left exhausted. Twice as good when they headline their own shows
