Observation from watching The First 48

Nearly evey episode has black perps/witnesses who don’t know the real names of the folks they run around with. They only know their nickname.
Is this a common thing in the black community?
There are some folks who I only know by their nickname, but they’re not people I pal around with.

There isn't one person I know that goes by an alias or nickname other than shortening Robert to Bob or something similar.

I post on a message board all day long and interact with folks I've been interacting with for years but only know them by their alias and not their real name.

Ummmmm......they know their real names. They just don't want to tell it to the cops.

have only seen that a few times but it's surprising to me how many and how fast a lot of those perps sing, they should watch the crime dramas and learn how to lawyer up

You've watched multiple episodes and still can't figure out they are lying to the detectives?

I think 75% of the people they arrest would've gotten off if they just asked for a lawyer and didn't confess.
Its unreal.
Its unreal.

Exactly.
They just sing so quick. Just lawyer up and shut up and you'll probably walk.

I think most of the time they say they only know the nickname, they are lying. They are trying to buy time, for themselves and the perp. They know the perps real name, they just don't want to tell the detective. They feel cornered, and in their mind, think they can say the nickname and hope they figure it out through someone else, and it takes the heat off of them.
But whenever shite gets real and they themselves get implicated, yeah, they sing like a bird. They'll snitch their arse off to save their own arse, or at least get less time.

Very common, I befriended the detectives in NOLA and Dallas from The First 48 at work.
I worked nights and often when I went in to do my patient assessment many are watching the show. One night, same scenario, and as I'm doing my assessment the patient frantically sits up. He starts yelling at the TV and to his 6 family members in the room. "OH shite dats Pookie, oh they after Pookie!
Run Pookie.... RUN!!"
They were cheering on trigger man Pookie. SMH.

I know my friends names. But for a few guys I have to think for a few minutes. I thought that’s just what friends did.

There were a couple of people I knew that went by their last name and I had no clue what their first name was til several years after knowing them. I've only known one person who went by a nickname and it was just a shortened version of his last name.

People are hard wired to want to tell their story. Investigators know that and exploit it. And its not just hoodrats. YouTube is full of interrogations of people from every economic and social status. Including cops who absolutely know what's going on and fall for it anyway.
