I am looking at getting a .38 special revolver for home defense. I have a .380 lcp and worry that the one time it jams will be when I need it the most. I would like to hear what the OT would recommend as far as home defense revolvers go...what would you recommend?

A pump action shotgun with the shortest barrel you can legally put on it.

A GP100 .357 Mag with a 4" barrel. You may as well have at least one HD handgun with some nuts to it.

The Judge

Its a .45 and can shoot .410 bore shells, but that's the best home defense revolver IMO

I have a shotgun but would like to have a revolver also. Clames, I'm looking at the Ruger gp100 because it also shoots .357

I have a Smith and Wesson 357 that I use for home defense. I don't remember the model number off the top of my head.

A shotgun is fine but I have kids at my house a lot and keep them in a Liberty safe in my office. A pistol is much easier to store in the nightstand in a biometric safe.

That's part of our problem is we have a daughter and I would feel better with a handgun while my wife grabs the shotgun out of the safe for backup in case SHTF.

So what happens when you fire that 357 at an intruder and miss? The bullet travels through the walls and hits one of your family members?

I'll have better control of my aim with a handgun compared to the spray of a shotgun.

That's why I want a shotgun. At 3am, anyone in the room where the firearm is used will suddenly be deaf and blind. It's like a flashbang going off. With a shotgun, there's less chance that first round's going to miss. The ability to tailor the loadout to lessen the risk of overpenetration is an added bonus.

Why limit yourself to one or the other? Neither has infinite shots in it.

He'd be past me at that point. Daughter's bedroom is further down the hall. I could defend the Alamo for a few hours if I could get to my safe though

So by that rationale the only acceptable home defense gun is a shotgun loaded with bird shot?

I don't disagree that a shotgun is probably ideal. Just not something that I'm comfortable leaving laying around in our house. Too many kids over here. My daughter wouldn't touch it.
