Comite Diversion Canal groundbreaking held this week, expected to be done by 2021

The canal will drain the Comite into the Mississippi during high-water events, potentially mitigating flooding in the entire Baton Rouge region, but particularly aiding residents in Livingston and northern East Baton Rouge parishes.

The project was proposed in the late 1970s, and lawmakers broke ground on a $30 million portion of the project in 2003 at Lilly Bayou. It sits mostly useless now, but will be tied into the final structure.
Louisiana takes 30 years to dig a ditch, thanks to environmental red tape.....but there is light at the end of the tunnel finally.

8/20/19 - "Comite River Diversion Canal project administrators request additional funds as they claim the project is in danger of running out of money after only 4 months. Expected completion date now estimated to be March of 2029"

If by chance they could get the funds and environmental done to build the Darlington Reservoir that would be icing on the cake.

I would assume there are huge pumps that would push the water in the river.
Question from a coastal restoration stand point, in dry times couldn’t this system work backwards and help the salinity levels in Lake Maurepas?

What's incredible was that some of the very politicians that are championing this project are the same ones that blocked in previous decades because they were working on real estate deals for themselves and their families. Some of these politicians bought land that they wanted the government to buy from them for the canal project, but the fear was that they'd use eminent domain.
Even in 2010 Bodi White got a bill passed that prevented the feds from using eminent domain in order to complete the project after it already started, which means they needed to find a contiguous string of properties with willing sellers and all it would take is one or two hold-outs to drive the prices up. In fact, that's what happened. Some of the land had been purchased but they couldn't get a clear path across.
The head of the Amite River Basic Commission lamented back in 2011 or so that a big flood was going to happen and then they'd be begging for eminent domain anyway so he was trying to urge everyone to act reasonable. It didn't help that the legal council for the ARBC was a known crook who had just gotten out of Federal prison.
This stuff should be more interesting and noteworthy to people around here than it is.

DOTD will build a boat launch on the Comite Division Canal by 2040. Boat access to be restricted until further notice.

Then been talking about the Darlington Reservoir and canal since 80’s right when I left this area.
If I am correct they studied the reservoir and said land was not stable enough to build a reservoir. I remember my father telling me if that reservoir was built a lot of the guys hoped the fishing would be good.
I’ll probably never see it in my lifetime or the Comite diversion canal. They will find and excuse resulting in more delays due to needing more money.

The environmental red tape was the least of the problems holding that project back. It was held up thanks to the ever-so-component leadership in the region.
