Light for floundering

I gigged all my young life but haven’t in about 20 years. I’m going to spend a good bit of time on some areas this summer that will afford me the chance to get back into it. I have my gig which is an old mortar hoe handle with a spike driven into it. It’s long and heavy so I can gig and hold a flounder with one hand. I’ve always used a Coleman lantern with a pie plate and have several and had friends that tried handheld q beams that didn’t work. Too much light.
My question is, since lights have come a long way, is there anything out there that could be used in lieu of Coleman lantern? A specific headlamp maybe?

There's a lot of LED options for this, but the truth is, I haven't heard anybody say any of them work better than a lantern and a pie plate. Something about that combination and the fact it doesn' create a lot of glare that just works.

Get a Princeton led dive light, an adjustable metal hose clamp, and build a 1/2” pvc pole with an arm rest and 45° angle on the bottom. Bottom piece is about 12” from the 45, 3-4’ section to a t coupler, another foot or so section above that. And about a foot section for the arm rest coming out of the t. I’ll get better measurements when I’m home tomorrow but that’s what we all use, and the led is a serious floundering light.

Those underwater LEDs are legit. Just make sure you do a trial run before you get to floundering hole. Had several adjustments to do on mine. So much easier than the old Coleman’s.

You can build your own with a light from oznium.com. I’ve built 6 of them myself. Easy to build.

With the exception of getting burned by the Coleman, it is about all you need. A LPG Coleman with a reflective shield was almost perfect. And your gig though not state of the art was deadly effective also. I don't see why you need to really upgrade from that nearly perfect setup but I understand we are in the modern times so LEDs and batteries may be nice but are not needed.

You need to mount some underwater lights to your shoes
