Could the average ot’er win the Boston Marathon?

First, it’s 26.2 miles. And I did run the Boston Marathon in 2015. Was proud just to cross the finish line - that in and of itself was a win in my book. So I can confidently say that no, I could never actually win it. 
Also, given a year to train, I think just about anyone could complete a marathon, barring some injury or medical condition.

I'll bet 99% couldn't qualify to start the race if given 3 years to train.
ETA: unless taking some charity type slot, you are going to have to show an official race where you are running sub 3 hrs or very near it depending on your age and gender.

Yeah I was confused by that too.
I guarantee no single person on the OT could even come close to winning. But I’d say with a year to train, more than 50% of the OT could complete it.

I have a friend who has done the Boston Marathon a few times. He runs about 11 miles a day. Trained and qualified. The first time he was kicking arse (we tracked his time on the online tracker), and he told me after that about the time he had only 7 miles to go his body completely gave out. He had nothing left. He finished but he said he was pretty much walking aimlessly to the finish line.

Nobody in here could come close to the top 100. Maybe even top 500.
Probably 0.1% of posters could qualify.
5% could run it well if trained.

The winner a couple years ago had a 4:41 pace for 26 miles. I don’t think anyone here could do one mile that pace with a year of training

Yea, that’s insane. My wife has run many many marathons and her training regimen alone is insane. I can’t imagine having to be the elite of that group to win the BM. Requires different genetics. African genetics.
