People in Louisiana do not always act rationally in choosing their politicians. There is a bit of a contrarian streak in them. So Edwin Edwards was chosen for governor multiple times because he was a hero to many and just plain cool. New Orleans is like so many big cities and it swings liberal/democratic. So rather than go with the greater good rather than the gut they choose the gut. Hence you have JBE instead of Vitter for governor and I know Vitter was a bit of a scoundrel. And Louisiana was a solid democrat state for many years and I know because I was raised there and lived there for till my mid thirties. Democrats should target Louisiana to flip to the blue side. I can see how this can be done. It may not be easy but it's a possibility.

One of those times was choosing between David Duke and Edwin Edwards.
While it would have sucked, I’d have voted for the crook. But I’m not proud of it.
JBE/Vitter was the same thing.

Well the first two times the Democrats stole it. Third time, Republicans had a bad candidate and by the fourth time they were having trouble faking those post-Katrina New Orleans numbers.

But look at how they vote locally, it’s still the idea of what government can do for me
The state house is dominated by republicans and the senate is trending that way
Most major areas of the state have had tax renewals/ increases voted down in the last year
The gas tax failed

No they can’t. If anything LA is turning more red each election cycle

she WON the three elections, in part, by playing the role of a conservative democrat in all of her campaign advertising
An Oklahoma congressman, whose name I can't recall, once advised a rookie congressman, "Vote liberal, press-release conservative".

Sorry I'm fairly young but how did she constantly get elected in a conservative state? She had no resume going into congress. She was a god damn real estate agent. Also she was pro-choice, how did the evangelicals put up with this shite?
Her dad was former long time mayor of New Orleans. Big powerful Democrat machine from an era before the red flip in Louisiana and the South in general...

Because there are extremely stupid people out there.
See Baton “rudge“, New Orleans, Shreveport, baltimore, detroit, and any other liberal or “democrat” run town/city just for examples.

Louisiana was not a conservative state until recently. I think I read some where that Governor Foster was like only the third republican ever elected state wide.

she LOST her final election after declaring in unambiguous language that, because Obama was less popular in LA, her state was racist. Thus sounding like the morons few reasonable "in the middle" want repping them.
The Louisiana Purchase deal she made certainly didn’t help her any, either.

Orleans Parish.
Husband from Shreveport (I think) with considerable political resources in his area.

Because she was good for Louisiana, maybe not the country, but she brought a lot of money/pork to the state. She was the chair of the Energy Committee and was on Appropriations.
Mary Landrieu's first two statewide elections-
State Treasurer, no republican ran, she won with 33% of the vote, when her democratic opponent decided not to contest the runoff.
Ran unopposed for re-election. Few year later she was in the US Senate.

WTF?
She was a state rep for almost 2 terms, then served 2 plus terms as state treasurer, ran for governor and came in 3rd. That's a decent resume.
She ran for J. Bennett Johnston's open seat, ne was a moderate Dem and she ran as a moderate Dem. She barely beat Woody Jenkins and Suzanne Haik Terrell, two pretty terrible candidates. For her third term she beat John Kennedy, who switched to the GOP for the race but really hadn't gotten a lot of GOP supporters at that point.

If it hadnt been for Katrina, and how the Democrat Political Machine was exposed in the aftermath, Landrieu would probably still be Senator.
