quote:

A Kentucky student is suing his local health department after it barred students who aren't immunized against the chickenpox from attending school and canceled extracurricular activities during an outbreak that has affected 32 people.

Jerome Kunkel, a senior at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart/Assumption Academy in Walton, Kentucky, refuses to get the chickenpox vaccine, citing his Christian faith, reported CNN affiliate WLWT. He and his father allege that he's being discriminated against because of religious beliefs.

quote:

In response to Kunkel's lawsuit, the health department stated: "The recent actions taken by the Northern Kentucky Health Department regarding the chickenpox outbreak at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart/Assumption Academy was in direct response to a public health threat and was an appropriate and necessary response to prevent further spread of this contagious illness."

quote:

Bill Kunkel, Jerome's father told WLWT, that he doesn't believe in the chickenpox vaccine and that "they're trying to push it on us." He told the station that they object to the particular vaccine because he believed it was derived from "aborted fetuses." "And of course, we're as Christians, we're against abortion," Kunkel said.

Christians are against the chickenpox vaccine because it is derived from aborted fetuses?

Some of the cell lines used in the research and development of certain vaccines were originally derived from aborted fetuses. Different churches have different stances on them. The Catholic Church says it’s ok to get them.

Gotta be honest, I'm torn on this one.

I'm a huge proponent of an individual's right to self-determine, but not at the expense of the greater well-being of his classmates.

So if you are vaccinated against chicken pox or any of the other diseases that have been all but eradicated, why does it bother you if a few kids don't get vaccinated? If the vaccine works you don't have anything to worry about right?

Yep...and here is the Catholic Church's response to it:

quote:

What does the Catholic Church think about these vaccines?
So glad you asked. First, even the National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) acknowledges that the cells used to make vaccines are far removed from the aborted cells. "There are a number of vaccines that are made in descendent cells of aborted fetuses....Since that time the cell lines have grown independently. It is important to note that descendent cells are not the cells of the aborted child."

In June 2005, the Catholic Church's Pontifical Academy for Life basically said that it doesn't like that aborted fetal cells were used to create vaccines, but acknowledged that there are no current alternatives for chickenpox, rubella, and hepatitis A, so in those cases the vaccines are morally justifiable to protect public health. (As mentioned above, there are alternatives for shingles and rabies.)

LINK

quote:

Why use fetal cells? Viruses that infect humans tend to grow better in human cells than in animal cells and fetal cells divide many more times than other cells do. Offit goes on to say that two cell lines used for vaccines were created from cells obtained via two legal, elective abortions in the 1960s.

quote:

These fetal-derived cell lines have been growing on their own in laboratories for the past 50 years and are used to make vaccines for rubella, hepatitis A, chickenpox, one kind of the shingles vaccine, and one version of the rabies vaccine. (A polio vaccine grown in human cells was used in other countries, but never in the US.) "No further sources of fetal cells are needed to make these vaccines," according to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

ETA: Bolded to show that lonnnnnnngggggg time ago....2 aborted fetuses helped create the vaccines that have gone on to save millions of lives. I would call that something good coming out of something horrible.

Why are people so frickin stupid. You can have it either way. Get the vaccine and go to school or don’t get the vaccine and go somewhere else that you won’t effect others.

That's not how vaccines work. You need herd immunity (from everyone being vaccinated) to better protect. Also...you have people that CANNOT get vaccinated due to legit medical reasons or...they are too young to be fully vaccinated. Chicken pox could be deadly to them. So they rely on herd immunity to protect them from exposure.

And look at the Measles outbreak in Washington state. It's been shown that the low immunization rates of that area have DIRECTLY been a reason why the outbreak spread so much and got so bad. People with young babies too young to get the vaccination were scared to go anywhere with their babies cause of the outbreak(Measles is one of the most contagious illnesses in the world. The person doesn't even have to be near you to spread it to you. They can have visited a store 2 hours before you and it is still in the air when you go into the store. And if you have not been vaccinated for it...it's like an 80-90% chance you get it if exposed to it)
