We can share the women
We can share the wine

Favorite versions?
For me it's Buffalo 11.9.79

The band is still feeding off relatively new Brent's cosmic energy, culminating in a pretty damn good peak.

I think "Jack Straw" ranks pretty high in the Dead canon as it was constantly in the rotation throughout the band's tenure, featured Jerry and Bob trading vocal duties, and IMO had some of Hunter's best lyrics (apparently influenced by Of Mice and Men ). On top of this is the jamming, nothing crazy experimental type II stuff but always solid with a good peak. Quintessential Dead.

What versions do you enjoy?

I know they are popular shows but the Cornell and Veneta shows have great versions of Jack.

It's easily a top 5 Dead song for me.

I'm partial to this one. My first show and the first song I ever heard them play live

8-27-72 and 5-17-77 stick out to me but it’s probably because they are official releases i listen to often.

Jack Straw

I got into a discussion with a good friend of mine that made the statement... "Jack Straw is the perfect song ever written/played".

We were out drinking listening to music and discussed ad nausea and I must say that I understood what he was trying to say. I'm not sure I agreed, but he made a good case for it.

Love the song. I'm partial to Europe '72 like many but interested to listen to other versions in this thread.

Cheers!

“Go back and take another listen homey:

Fall Tour 85
MSG Fall '87
Hampton Spring 88
Anything from 89
Spring Tour 90
Boston 91”

Lucky to say I was at almost all these shows...I’m a little surprised that 4/6/87 didn’t get a shoutout. Amazing version that slides into a nice deal to end set one. The JS jam is fantabulous.

As a fan that became a novice level Deadhead only earlier this year do to CV-19 I can say that Jack Straw is one of my favorite songs. The different "favorite versions" listed here are exactly why I think they are so great. Same song, different version and I have simply never got tired of listening to them constantly after almost 5 months.

As a guitar player:
I am now playing many of the ones I like best: I can play Deal, Althea, Bertha, Trucking but Jack Straw has been almost impossible for me to play as the chord/shapes are crazy.

Props to Jerry for his various Mixolydian lead scales. Incredible technique.

What Jerry starts doing at the 3:40 mark goes down as utterly amazing. While the recording itself isn't the best I am not sure the playing isn't.

Jack Straw 01-11-79

ETA - I see this 1/11/79 show was posted on the 2nd reply!! Oh well enjoy.
