have fun playing your Rees Jones' aiming at one spot and playing long range darts. There's really nothing better than watching a guy miss the fairway and wedge it out back into the middle because there's no option, SEAUX INTERESTING

So is going in the fairways

Firm and Fast >>>>>>>>>> tree lined courses that are slow and soft.

Why do you hate the Master?
Posted on 3/12/19 at 10:55 am to ell_13
Masters has wide fairways and plays firm and fast the majority of the time.

They also overseed the golf course, which rusty scroggins claims ruins golf courses.

It definitely makes it less good. Look at pictures of Augusta from 40ish years ago, less trees, less rough, more width and angles.
"Tiger proofing" Augusta has deminished the course (they doesn't mean it's still not really good)

Look who doesn't understand design.

Less rough, trees, rough and shortened... Back to the way it was would mean multiple -20 scores unless you completely change the greens. The athleticism of today's golfers and equipment changes would make it far too easy and basically a joke. Period. It was a whole 500 yards shorter. I bet you want them to put wide-bladed bermuda back on the greens, too.

It had to happen. If Jack had today's equipment back in his day, he would've torched that place.

Just like Rivera every year. As it stands now 20 under wins it anyway so your point is moot

your response has nothing to do with the overseed. You're just going on a tangent about how the layouts changed over the years.

The layout is worse and overseeing it makes it worse too. There you go

quote:Are you illiterate? I said there would be multiple -20 scores. No one has ever hit that -20 number and no one wants that. DJ and Koepka and JT would put on a clinic simply hitting wedges everywhere or getting angles into par 5s that have much less risk/reward.

I get it. Adding trees removes strategy (off the tee) and adds difficulty. But I don't find the course less interesting at all.

They already do, widening the fairways helps the rest of the field.

And going into the greens.

and adds difficulty
Not really, for the guys driving the ball well anyway

Because you don't understand golf

If you think widening the fairways and removing rough and shortening it back to 6900 yds levels the playing field, I don’t know what to tell you. Sure, more guys will be able to get to -10... but they’ll still lose by -14. It gives the advantage to a select few. Whereas now shorter (meaning 290 instead of 340) and in the fairway is better than being in the trees and gives those guys a chance: Spieth, ZJ, Serg, Willett don’t win or even get close with the old layout. Because the longer guys would have almost zero trouble. Now, when they stay out of trouble, they are damn hard to beat. But that’s why they win any tournament. Long and accurate will trump just about anything.

Right so making the shorter guys have less penalty when they don't hit a good shot gives them a better chance. Longer is always better than shorter so why eliminate the short guys before they ever hit a shot with the length of the course and the length of the rough?
Posted on 3/12/19 at 12:34 pm to ell_13
The biggest problem with overly narrow fairways is that the short players are also finding the rough.
When everyone is hitting from rough, there’s almost no chance for the shorter guys to win because of how much easier it is to hit shorter irons in from the rough than longer ones.

I have no idea how people can't understand this, it's really not a complicated concept
