That case could be a great first knife if you're thinking single blade. If you don't mind fibbing a bit, get it a little dirty/used look (or actually find one used) and give it a rich backstory... as someone mentioned above. If a kid thinks that something is pretty important, they're less likely to lose it. Don't necessarily have to say it's handed down through family, but just a "guy you know" or something like that.

just make sure he knows not to take it to school.

My six year old son won a swiss army knife for selling popcorn in Cub Scouts. was real proud of it and took it to school to show his buddies. Teacher freaked out. He almost got suspended for a week but cooler heads (assistant principal) stepped it.

What a freaking joke.

Thanks for all the recs. I was thinking in the area of a single blade with a lock as I've had non-locking folders close on me (my fingers) several times. But, the lock needs to be easy enough for him to unlock. My papaw owned a hardware store so I can't count the number of knives I've owned over the years. In fact, I probably have one laying around I could give him. But, I think I'd rather buy him something new. I was thinking something like a Schrade or Case single blade. I know he'll like whatever it is. Thanks again.

I got my 10 yr old nephew a Case Sodbuster Jr for his first knife. Excellent little knife, he loves it. The cheapest price is around $27.

I was about to suggest that. My first knife was a Case knife similar to that. Mine was an all black handle however. I think I was about 9 when Dad gave it to me. I still have it to this day.

Case Trapper. My aunt and uncle started a collection of them for me for every birthday and Christmas when I was about that age. Different handles. I had a black one, deer horn, yellow, and several others. My uncle also dabbled in woodworking, mostly making lures to fish with and other projects. He made a set of wood handles for a 1911 he had, and made himself and me a set of knife handles with the same wood. Old walnut. Looks great and I still have the knife.

I have a few. Great knife. The only things I'd caution about giving this to a child is they come razor sharp out of the box, and they close up pretty easy. I can see where a child could get his knuckles checked by one. I'd skin a couple critters with it to knock the edge off a little before handing to a child.

I joke that I was in the last class that got to carry a pocket knife at school.

High school grad in 2002. Of course I spent a lot of time in the wood shop. So if you're giving me a table saw, circular saw, ban saw, etc., my swiss army knife is kind of worthless.
