I've read through some previous threads on BRCC vs UClub vs CCLA. I recently moved to BR and looking for a solid facility to play and practice. UClub and BRCC are both equidistant from me. Corp is paying my initiation and dues but from what I have read BRCC seems to have its nose up a bit. I drove around UClub this weekend and enjoyed what I saw. The course looks challenging and the practice facility looks pretty incredible. The entry point to UClub is drastically lower than BRCC and I don't have roots (nor does wife) here in BR so it seems a bit silly to punt on 30-40k (Under 30 so qualify for junior rates) for a club that I will have to work hard to gain traction in.

CCLA seems to be the "I am a member because my neighbor is a member but I've never seen the first tee" vibe. It is also a bit out of the way / not convenient as the others.

The previous threads are a few years old and sounds like UClub underwent a change in its greens?

What say the TDGB?

BRCC is old old money. It's like a non legacy from out of state applying to Yale.

My dad was a member of U-Club back when it reopened after the redesign. I was in college so I was able to run out there and play quite a bit. The course is always in good shape, but they over did the reno. It is very difficult. Also, he got sick of the club due to how crowded it was. Him and I played a Sunday afternoon round and quit after nine because it was going to be a six hour round, and he immediately canceled his membership and started the process of CCLA.

He joined CCLA 2 or 3 years ago and he couldn't be more thrilled. He found a game he plays with every weekend and really enjoys the group. CCLA to me also has a much better layout.

Have never played BRCC so I can't comment on that.

Based on what I know, I would join CCLA over U-Club. Obviously convenience for you may be different. Just my opinion.

I don’t understand how CCLA is out of the way but not Uclub.

It’s been a long time from when I use to play at CCL but the membership for golf was similar to MCC, which I think you said you were a member of. They have a lot of non-golf members unlike MCC because they have social and non-golf membership options. But, I was in college but the older guys that played regularly very much remind of the crowd at MCC.

I've played both the UClub and CCL and it's a little like comparing apples to oranges. I think you'll be happy with either decision if you're a decent golfer. They both present challenges. I prefer the layout of CCL but the practice facilities are top notch at UClub.

Biggest drawback from CCL would be traffic on that end of town in the afternoons during the week. Gets pretty congested. UClub will probably be busier con the course though. They offer pretty good membership rates.

I think BRCC is over-rated from a cost perspective.

Perspective of an outsider, so take it w a grain of salt. I have played all 3 a bunch.

BRCC is the best course of the 3 with a great layout, always in great shape, and a good range. Seems like finding a good game out there would be kind of hard and may take a while. Not sure if that's a problem for you, but it would play into my decision.

CCL is an awesome course, the best of the 3 off the tee (great driving course), and has a good range. Obviously a CC atmosphere. If you have kids, it seems like the best place of the 3. Seems like it gets a ton of play for a CC.

UClub is a challenging course and can be really difficult around the greens. If you're a range rat and love to practice or if you want to find a place with lots of good players, this might be your place. Seems like it's not that hard to find a game out there if you can play.

I’ve been to all 3 many times. CCL is what you’re looking for. You’re vibe I’ve never felt there. You may want to give it a second look.

Some thoughts on the three clubs discussed. Being very familiar with all three, all of them would fit your needs and be good for your game.

UC has a really good practice area and getting in a regular game should not be an issue. A good strong core of young members that are fun to be around. Not a difficult course for tee shots. Approaches and short game carry the importance. Owners could put a little more investment in the course and support the grounds personnel. It is pretty much just golf, and maybe a beer and burger after the round. Changing your shoes in the parking lot solidifies that point.

CCL and BRCC are the more rounded clubs with golf, tennis, swimming, workout areas, dining, etc....

BRCC has the younger overall membership than CCL (I found that interesting until two CCL members told me that is true and is a concern for them). BRCC has a decent practice facility that is getting better. Their course s usually the one in the best shape as it gets the least amount of rounds. Very traditional layout as you would expect for a club that has been around a long time. No outside tournaments - except the LA State Am this year. Very tough driving course that requires accuracy and the greens are exceptional. They are near capacity for their membership and have no financial issues. Great family atmosphere as well.

CCL is about the same on the tee ball game as UC but has some tough green complexes. The best layout of the three courses in my opinion. Usually does not drain as well as UC or BRCC and that has hindered play in the last year. Finances have always been a concern/issue. That clubhouse is a monster to maintain - and costly.

If your employer is footing the initiation / dues, or if you have the funds, BRCC would be the best choice IMHO. The fact that their "all in" is twice that of CCL and they are near full and have no financial hurdle, says they are doing something right.

If it is just golf, it is hard to pass on the UC.

Good luck and glad to have you on board in BR!

Quick update for all those in the BR region. Played BRCC, CCLA, & Uclub in that order. Immediately called Frank (membership guy at Uclub) to get it rolling. Made a few friends upset but Uclub is above and beyond the best “private” course in BR. I’ll be rocking my green and white MCC (Metairie CC) bag until I decide to buy that stitch UC bag in the pro shop. Come tell me hey and beers on me after a round. Hope to see a few you baws out there.
