I always loved how Rex had to leave his own party to pay tribute to Comus.

For all the talk about how Rex is King of Carnival... most people know the truth.

Hard work, success, money, and connections, you can get into Rex. If you ain't born into Comus, you ain't getting in.

In a city like New Orleans, hard work and business success will always, always, bow down to old money.

Rex is only King of Carnival because Comus doesn't want identity revealed.

What was so secret about Comus membership that they would rather quit parading instead of naming its members?

Is this going to be an OT tradition? It seams like every year we go over this.

I don’t get the fascination with Comus, tbh. Who cares...

I think in the next 20 years we will see a black or hispanic Rex King. Even though the Comus king is not public, I'm 100% sure New Orleans would freeze over in July before we see a non-white Comus king.

No doubt. There is a black Lieutenant in Rex now.

Well, the tens of thousands of people who move to NOLA each year, need to be educated...

But he might have to wear whiteface...

Seriously, yes, I think this will happen at some point. Someone like Jose Suquet (although he's Cuban). We might have had one already, but pretty much all of the wealthy and successful black men in the city are already part of Zulu.

Now... that will happen long before we have a black Queen of Carnival.

This is true, although there are a lot of non-riding members of Zulu. I think Zulu might have the largest number of non-riding members of any krewe.

Rex has already had two black maids. Wow, that sounds bad but it did happen.

I'm ready for a transgendered, black LGBTQ hermaphrodite. The time has come to start a conversation.

Organized celebration of Mardi Gras, a society or krewe, began with the Mistick Krewe of Comus. Period. New Orleanians are a nostalgic/historically-minded bunch of folks.

I do not know if the Cowbellion de Rakin Society, from Mobile, which founded Comus, started out as rich/old money, but they were the first and they still exist in New Orleans. That is why so many are fascinated.

The disappointment felt at a chinchy parade on Mardi Gras was only made worse at the disappointment that Comus signalled the end each year. Now, even that is gone, and the day sort of fizzles for some folks, myself included. At least before, you knew Comus was still there, still to come, and if you didn't get it out of your system, you did once Comus passed.

Those questioning why Rex visits Comus, and defers to Comus, even though Rex is Rex (King)? Well, Comus is a god which trumps a king. Plus, Comus had a fifteen year head start.

I know that but it was still a huge step for the organization. And when i said it sounds bad it was not that I had a problem with it. It was that saying two black maids just is awkward there.

There’s actually a few of these “societies” that have a ball, king etc. but don’t parade.

From my understanding, the Cowbellions were actually a bunch of vagrants that just took to the streets to celebrate the New Year in Mobile in a debaucherous fashion. Their origins had nothing to do with Mardi Gras, Carnival[e], or any other sort of Winter Solstice celebration. So in reality, Mardi Gras DID start in NOLA. I don't think they were defined by money to start, however, the faction that broke off to form Comus in NOLA were, as they were some of the most prominent businessmen and influencers in the city.

Which is one of the things holding New Orleans back. Not the only thing, but one.

Sidenote: what if Brees wanted to join Comus?

There are tons of krewes that don't parade. They aren't as secretive as you're pretending.
