Andrew Yang Wants to Prepare America for the Robot Revolution

quote:
Yang is worried about a future where the automation of jobs leads to “the disintegration of our society.” And he has a very specific solution to stop that from happening. He wants to give every adult US citizen $1,000 a month, no questions asked.
quote:
As a former corporate lawyer and founder of Venture for America, a fellowship program to help entrepreneurs start businesses in cities like Detroit and Cleveland, he brings a jobs-first approach to tackling many of the country’s social and economic problems. UBI isn’t the only tenet of his campaign. There are more than 70 policy recommendations on his website, including ideas like hiring a White House psychologist to closely monitor the mental health of White House staff and creating a “digital social currency” to reward (and gamify) altruistic behavior.
quote:
Yang: I’m running for president because I’m convinced that we are in the third inning of the greatest economic transformation in the history of the world. And the third inning has brought us Donald Trump. He’s our president because we automated away 4 million factory jobs in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and the other swing states he needed to win and did win. My friends in Silicon Valley know that we’re about to do the same thing to millions of retail workers, call center workers, fast food workers, truck drivers, and on and on through the economy. So I’m running for president to wake up America to the fact that it’s not immigrants or globalization but this technology that is transforming our way of life. We need to make big, dramatic moves as a society to move forward.
quote:
The worst-case scenario is the disintegration of our society. You can see the red flags right now. Our labor-force participation rate is down to 62%, the same level as El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. Right now is year 10 of an expansion and one in five prime working-age men haven’t worked in the last 12 months. Our life expectancy is declining for the last three years, with eight Americans dying of drug overdoses every hour. And our political and social dysfunction is only worsening. So the worst case scenario, unfortunately, is chaos, violence, and a disintegration of our way of life.

I voted MAGA. It doesn’t matter if you are fully right or fully left. Once you listen to Andrew speak you have to consider his ideas. He has over 70 data driven policies currently on his website. He is a serial entrepreneur who can see the future for what it is while the majority have their heads in the sand.

UBI is interesting until you actually interact with our massive underclass
There would be riots within months as that $1000 would get spent in days

He's right on pretty much everything. UBI might not be the most effective route though.

Automation is a problem we will have to deal with eventually. UBI won’t solve the real issue - people having a purpose.

Nah, no one offered coal miners money, they were told to learn to code.

Too many people already don’t have a purpose. Giving $1000 of tax payer money to these people isn’t going to help

UBI is just the new term for helicopter money. It’s inflationary and pointless.
If everyone is given $1000 how much value does that $1000 have?

Sad reality is that the only thing that will stop the disintegration of society is some kind of right wing authoritarian dictatorship. Everything else is just academic discussion and pipe dreaming.

This is how you get SKYNET.

Diagnosis right, prescription useless.
We don't even need to get into hyperinflation arguments. If every American has an additional $12,000 annually, guess what near every landlord in the country is doing? Common goods producing companies? Luxury goods producing companies? Everything's going up in a race to maximize the new pie. It could be catastrophic pricing volatility or it could be gradual, but no one's real wealth is changing long term.

I’ll give you a hint.
Scarcity creates value.
Try again.

... the $12,000 comes from tax dollars. Why would prices change if the overall taxes paid were the same as today?
UBI can essentially be the fair tax but conservatives oppose it

Why can't we create a society made for humans? AI, automation, and other bleeding edge technologies aren't inevitabilities, these a choices that man has a say in.
You about to tell businesses and people what they can and cannot do?

Do you support gutting all other entitlements? Or do you plan on living on this $12k?

UBI is just another social program that will enable the underclass to do nothing but shite out kids out of wedlock.
