Fo those clamoring for Will Wade to get a big raise

I'm actually a bigger basketball fan than a football fan, so I want everything done that's possible and within reason to keep Wade at LSU. However, there seems to be some perception that he is underpaid and underappreciated by LSU. There was a thread a few weeks back that I will link that included the salaries of the SEC basketball coaches and his pay is not out of whack at all:
Note: The previous thread still included Mark Fox and Andy Kennedy. I have removed them and added Crean and Davis.
Thread discussing salaries
John Calipari, Kentucky $7,435,376
Rick Barnes, Tennessee 3,250,000
Tom Crean, Georgia 3,200,000
Cuonzo Martin, Missouri 3,000,000
Avery Johnson, Alabama 2,800,000
Frank Martin, South Carolina 2,800,000
Mike White, Florida 2,710,000
Bryce Drew, Vanderbilt 2,700,000
Will Wade, LSU 2,500,000
Kermit Davis, Ole Miss 2,500,000
Mike Anderson, Arkansas 2,450,800
Bruce Pearl, Auburn 2,400,000
Billy Kennedy, Texas A&M 2,300,000
Ben Howland, Mississippi. St. 2,050,000
Edited to correct Rick Barnes
Outside of Calipari, the salaries are bunched up fairly close. With a $500,000 raise Wade could be the third highest paid coach in the conference. For $700,000 he could be tied for second.
So, yes, he likely deserves a raise and a contract extension, but any salary inequities are relatively minor.

What’s more important IMO is facilities upgrades

He doesn’t need a raise this year unless we go far in the tournament. If we get a Final Four appearance, you move him up to 3rd in the conference. But either way, he’s merited some additional investment in the program. Make the upgrades to the PMAC and basketball facilities

He will still have 4 years left on a $2.5M/yr deal which is guaranteed BOTH ways, if someone wanted to hire him after this season they would have to pay us $10M to get him.
Now I'm not saying he wouldnt deserve an extension and raise, but I could see something like maybe a year or 2 added on his current deal and maybe a $250k-$500k raise on it. It also wouldnt totally surprise me if they waited 1 more season.

I disagree. Wade has done a fantastic job turning this program around after a decade of irrelevance. Say we get matched up with Murray St. in the first round and lose a close game because Ja Morant goes off. It would be disappointing, but still an amazing season. If we want to keep this guy long term, we need to make sure we stay ahead of the curve before the blue bloods inevitably come calling.

I was wondering about Barnes and thinking that Tennessee got a bargain. How does Texas feel now?

We don't need to give him a raise, just for the sake of giving him a raise. If other teams come calling, then you pay the man. If he begins to sniff around, and pay is the issue, you pay the man.
There may already be clauses in his contract that say if he makes it so far he gets a bump in pay anyway.

We should let the season play out before making any decisions. Charlie/Skip made a great point yesterday about sustained success. Not just a year or two here or there, but making the tourney 4 years in a row.

I said a raise only if he gets to a Final Four this year. If that happens, you pay him and increase the length of his contract and his buyout before anyone can come calling

Sometimes schools just get a little too quick on the trigger on some long time coaches if things slip a little bit. He missed the tournament just ONCE in 17 years at Texas (3rd to final season), his last 2 years he still made the tournament and won a game even in one of those years in the tourney.
I just dont know what they were thinking. That is some pretty consistent success and they traded him in for clearly a worse return at the moment. Texas got a gift to get in the tourney last year at 19-14, 8-10 B12, and lost in the 1st game anyways. Yeah Smart was getting VCU to the tourney but that's exactly what Barnes was already giving you. Heck, a lot of coaches continue to get VCU to the tourney anyways.
Certainly not a good look for Texas as they continue to be a bubble team each year. Heck, 3 years ago they were terrible, 11-22. Meanwhile Rick Barnes takes a bunch of 3-stars at Tennessee to #1 in the country

Agreed. Specifically whatever he was promised whenever we hired him. LSU basketball is not above being a stepping stone. Keeping promises will help make sure we do not become one.

Don’t give a shite what anyone else is payed. This might be our only chance to actually build a winning program. Pay him 10 million per year if that’s what it takes

An unforced raise as a show of support, faith, and loyalty is a pretty powerful statement and can go a long way in retaining a coach when someone does eventually come calling.

If only we took this same approach in regards to our football coach. I’m sure you’ll agree it’s appropriate there as well, right?

I get the point here, but if we make the tournament this year and next year and don't give him a good raise, he's not going to wait around for 2 more years after that
I also agree with the post saying a commitment to improve facilities is more important.
That shite needs to get done ASAP.

And do we know that he doesn't have something built into his contract that says if he makes the NCAA tourney he gets X amount of a raise, sweet 16 X amount, final 4 X amount?

Nikki Caldwell is grossly overpaid and Alleva just gave her a contract extension.
Who do you think is worth more to LSU, her or Will Wade?
