Called data dividends, or sometimes digital or technology dividends, the somewhat obscure idea got a boost on Tuesday from an unexpected source:

California's new governor, Gavin Newsom. "California's consumers should ... be able to share in the wealth that is created from their data. And so I've asked my team to develop a proposal for a new data dividend for Californians, because we recognize that your data has value and it belongs to you," said Newsom during his annual State of the State speech.

Nah, it'll probably be a tax that will be held by the CA state government for the "good of the people" or similar crap to fund more social welfare programs.

I don't see anything wrong with that

Afterall, they're currently using it for free as it stands.

It could easily be taxed to the companies and the individuals would receive it in the form of a state income tax credit. I don't think that is unreasonable, but it makes sense. Companies using your data without permission or with blanket releases shouldn't be the way it is done.

For example, you shouldn't be required to allow AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, etc. to use your private or personal information or data for commercial sales purposes to other entities as a part of a requirement to use their service. It's extortion at its finest when all the companies require this basically.

This my damn idea.
It is MY data, I want to get paid if you make money off if it.
Very simple and will revolutionize and democratize internet media behemoths.

I think some on here are reflexively saying this is bad because it's coming from California. I personally like the idea of exploring ideas like this or some of the block chain proposals that secure your data so it isn't used without your permission and/or compensation.

This is pretty stupid.CA just passed a law called the California consumer Privacy act where can residents can tell any company to stop selling their data and have rights to know exactly how it is being used. Goes into effect 1/1/2020. People are going to be opting out of that like crazy. That's how companies make so much money on data, by selling it.

Don't use their services so they don't have your data. My God, everyone thinks everything is free. This is how Facebook, Twitter, etc. make money needed to exist.

I don't think that we're speaking the same language right now. I think companies should pay you for your data.

This isn’t a new concept. Microsoft gives you credit points for searching on Bing. Credit cards have done this for years with cash back bonuses.
