Orgeron should be rewarded. But the unknown caveat of his new contract will be his buyout. It was jacked up in his original deal because his annual salary was low by SEC head coaching standards.

On Orgeron’s original contract that was supposed to run through 2021, the buyout was $3,500,000 if before 11/28/17; $3,000,000 if before 11/28/18; $2,500,000 if before 11/28/19; $1,500,000 if before 11/28/20; $500,000 if before 11/28/21.

Though Orgeron is 25-8 overall and 15-7 in the SEC, LSU would be wise not to get caught in a Malzahn situation.

If Orgeron does get $1 million more in salary, lower his buyout annually by $1 million, extend his contract by no more than three seasons through 2024 (because he has plenty of built-in financial incentives tied to team record, postseason accomplishments and team academic performance), give assistants pay raises and proceed with caution.

A lot of “ifs” to write such a pointed argument

I agree with pretty much that whole article.

Orgeron needs and deserves an extension but We need to be careful to not run ourselves out of options.

I don’t necessarily agree that he deserves a raise though. He’s not going anywhere there’s no reason to give him a million more dollars. But more years on the contract is needed

Extend to 5 years at $4 mil per year plus incentives.

Buyout should be $1 mil per year left on contract.

Well, if this was Auburn then I might be worried about something dumb like that, but it's LSU so no worries there.

We should include an incentive of $500,000 for him to leave at any time.

2018 was a good season that I was happy with and still am. I just don't understand giving a coach a raise for one good season. It seems we are taking a step in the right direction, but I would like to see him improve on our record in 2019 or at least another top 10 finish before a raise is given.

This seems fair. Most people should be able to live with this.

Coach O needs a raise and extension. He’s proven he will work hard and has the program heading upward.

Wait, 9-3, 5-3 with a better offense deserves almost getting fired, but 10-3, 5-3 with a worse offense deserves a pay bump and extension.

We keep digging the hole deeper and deeper. We did the same thing with the Les contract and buy out. You would think the administration would wake up.

I'm fine with a modest raise and extension. Looking at it from a market value perspective, Muschamp, Pruitt, and Stoops are making just a little more than O so bump him to their range.

But there's no justification whatsoever in jacking up the buyout.

At first I was against the extension as well for the same reasons I gave for a raise. But, that's why I love the Rant sometimes. Reading the board I changed my mind on the extension. A modest raise is good, but not a million dollars a year or something crazy like that.

"Malzahn situation"? Is Auburn trying to run him off? If Malzahn was available when Orgeron was hired LSU would have signed him to a bigger contract then he has now. And I am happy with Orgeron and happy to see Orgeron get an extension.

He gets a raise when he can actually score points and make a game against Bama, I mean he was hire to beat Bama. Getting zero points two out of three years doesn’t deserve a extension against bama.

The formula was supposed to be Orgeron slightly underpaid with best O and D coordinators in the country with high salaries. We got the best D, but not the best O. Not the formula we started with.

No he doesn’t. He has a contract. Wait until after next season to see how he stacks up to coaches that have had 2 years with their respective programs ie Mullen and Fisher. He has to play those 2 every year... losing to one of both of them again next season is a cause for concern.

You would think your dumbass would read a whole comment before responding but since you’re incapable I’ll say it again.

He needs and deserves an extension. It’s not time for a raise yet

I dig it. Bonus for SEC championship game appearance and one for the win. Bonus for playoff win(s).

If it hasn’t been already THIS is how it should always be done.
