I'm an O supporter, but this is frickin stupid! Why in the world would you extend him? The dude isn't leaving and no one would try to steal him from us.

People are going to freak, but this extension is likely just for looks and doesn't mean a thing.

Every school keeps their HC under long term contract. It's to create a sense of stability for recruiting.

He's the 10th highest paid head coach in the SEC. The only coaches who make less are Barry Odom, Matt Luke, Derek Mason, and Joe Moorehead. I think it would be fair to pay him at least like an average SEC coach. For instance, he makes less than Jeremy Pruitt, Will Muschamp, and Chad Morris. I believe he should make at least as much, probably more, than those three. If LSU gives him a raise for a yearly salary of 4.25-4.5MM and add a year or two in length without a substantial rise in his buyout, I think that would be fair.
With the ever-growing inflation of coaching salaries nation-wide, it is what it is. $3.5MM today isn't what it was even as recently as 5 years ago. The most important thing is his buyout amount. If that remains manageable, I have no problem with a raise and an extension.

I love what O has done so far but I think it’s getting a little bit ahead of ourselves with an extension so soon.

Nah, you're not in the minority. Everyone knew this was going to happen and have been trying to guess what it will be and are reacting to hypotheticals. A reasonable person waits to see what the new deal will be before forming an opinion.

Lock him up for a decade like A&M did with Jimbo. Brings stability to the program and helps recruiting long term.
