re: For 2 sport prospects, negotiating with Manieri to take INITIAL scholarship burden

The OP may be onto something. Can baseball give him a scholly, and Hampton have nothing to do with football (no contact with coaches, etc.) until that time that he decides to actually go to college? Then if he decides not to go to the MLB, he signs on with the football team assuming we save a scholly for him. If he does go pro, then baseball gets their scholly back and football doesn't lose a scholly.

I think Indiana Tiger mentioned something about this a while back. Would be an interesting situation to say the least.

Problem is if he passes on the MLB draft and also passes on football. Then baseball's in a huge world of hurt because they've dedicated a full scholarship to a player.

You protect yourself by putting something like the following in the offer:
quote:
We are offering you a full scholarship, but depending on the result of the draft for all of our signees we may have to lower the amount.
At min. baseball would be willing to sign this guy with the highest offer we would make to anyone.

‘World of hurt” if he decides to just play LSU baseball???
This guy is solid enough baseball player to be considered to be first round. LSU baseball has only one OF committed to date. HE WILL ONLY HELP LSU BASEBALL. And the scholarship from baseball will be only for the first year, the remainder (2 years if he is successful and is drafted or 3 years if he stays the full time) will agreeably come from football.
Secondly, Hampton needs an offer from a team like LSU baseball to leverage MLB. Secondly, he’ll likely or should redshirt in football anyway. Please tell why he wouldn’t use as leverage an offer from a team like LSU Baseball and minimize football as a freshman to mature a year. It wouldn’t cost football until he plays the next 2-3 years, baseball would have a top quality OF for at least 3 years for an average scholarship of 25-33%/year.
I see this as a win/win for football, baseball and Hampton.

This and best case scenario that ties up 4 players PM otherwise would've had locked in. I'm sure they've thought through every one of these possibilities.

I could very well be wrong on this, but wouldn’t the problem be that football would still have to take a risk in this scenario?
If I understand the 25 signing limit rule, then under the scenario proposed, the football team would have to risk signing 25 players and not having a spot left if the baseball player gets to campus and decides he wants to play, or the football team would still have to leave a spot open, only sign 24, and then if the baseball player decides not go to MLB or only play baseball, then football is left without the benefit of a full signing class.
I mean, I guess the only benefit I see for football is that they don’t lose the open spot and can carry it forward to the next years signing class if the baseball player doesn’t end up playing football.

Granted, he’s not 6’4 with the Golden Wing, but a player of Hampton’s caliber would legitimately be offered 0.5-and maybe even a full. Certainly, LSU Baseball can offer less than other schools, but the big picture here is he wouldn’t hurt baseball much- if any -his first year, and would be free years 2, 3 and maybe 4. There is still in state tuition that makes in state signees amenable and TOPS for some with the understanding that 1.0 opens up for them next year to be distributed.
Maybe so, maybe not. Negotiating between O and M is required. It’s not like we’re taking about a shite player- in either sport. In the world of business, this gets done. Obviously, Hampton has to be ok with it.

He would count against football as soon as he practices, even if it is a player organized summer workout. Don't overthink or imagine this. The only way he would be on a partial baseball scholarship is if he gives up football entirely.

Here is a little piece of trivia. Chad Jones and Jared Mitchell have National Championship rings in two sports. Both were on the 2007 BCS Chamionsip football team and the 2009 National Championship baseball team.

The rule was put in place because of Bear Bryant.

He's saying you cant hide a football player on a baseball scholarship
If you play than more than 1 sport, the scholarship counter goes to the highest grossing revenue sport.
NCAA doesn't care where the money actually comes from- it just counts against that sport. For us that's football.
Even though the player might not actually receive a football scholarship, as far as NCAA numbers go, they do. The ONLY way a football plus another sport athlete can play both and not count against the football numbers is to not receive ANY scholarship money.

At LSU, Jared Mitchell was the last I recall. Scholarship athletes are not prevented from playing multiple sports.
He was on a football scholarship which didn't count against 11.7 baseball scholarships.

Pass it up the chain for a change! My thinking is in that situation, football doesn't have to take that huge risk by letting him sign in Feb. It might not even be necessary, but having Mainieri offer would be a show of good faith while we wait for his ultimate decision.
On a side note, I bet Mainieri is chomping at the bit in hopes this guy comes to LSU, more so than Orgeron. It's a free full scholly for baseball!

I posed this same question a few weeks ago. Duck

That's not what the OP is asking, though. He's asking if you can use a baseball letter of intent to hold a player until he gets to school and receives a football scholarship.
I could see it possibly working if you don't sign a 25th player in football.

Didn’t Miami used to give their football players track scholarships when they were in probation?
It wasn't a widespread practice but that is how they got Santana Moss.
