I change about 75% of the water every two weeks.

I have 55 gallon and 75 gallon saltwater tanks. The 75 gallon is a predator tank it has trigger, puffers, foxface,etc. The other tank is a community tank with clowns, tang, golbeys, cleaner shrimps, etc. Bandits the things I have learned from maintaining these tanks is its all about water flow and filtration. As birdman mentioned early just do about a 20% waterchange about every 3 weeks and top off the water as it evaporates. Maintaining fish is alot easier than setting up a reef tank with corral and reefs I just don't have the time for that. I love this hobby and going to Hawaii last year and seeing the reefs and the wildlife in person just makes this hobby more fun now.

I kept guppies as a kid.
They can be all different types and you can be an amateur genetic researcher with the new generation every 3 months
Just let them eat the excess (and there will be a lot of that!).

I have a 180 saltwater tank with about 20 small to medium corals and recently picked up a 300 gallon reef setup that had some really nice large pieces in it.

Salt is the way to go.
Super expensive but far more beautiful.
How did you do in chemistry class? A salt water tank is simply a living chemistry experiment.
If you got a b+ or better you are golden.
Again -- expensive. Not advisable unless you have plenty of discretionary income.

Depending on your level of involvement, these choices are very different.
Discus are gonna require pristine water conditions, hence the most care
Planted tank will require new lighting fixtures, different fish that wont eat the plants, and a co2 system. Planted tanks tend to focus more on the plants and less on the fish
Cichlids look great and you can have a wide variety of them making the tank look very good

How big of a tank do I need for 6 or so cichlids?
Now that I have a daughter it gives me an excuse to get a good set up. We always had goldfish and other random freshwater fish growing up and I loved it.

This is a pretty good calculator for how many fish you can put in an aquarium. I think its relatively accurate for small to medium sized fish. Bigger fish I wouldnt follow this (arowana, large plecos, etc)

I have a 125 gallon tank with 30 gallon sump that is currently set up for freshwater tropicals. Used to be salt water but converted after moving to an area without a pet shop to support the hobby. Really wanting to set up the sump with plants and a grow light to help with water quality.

Not anymore. I've had a few through the years. I do bioactive reptile enclosures now. Same principle as a fish tank, but with dirt and land animals.
