GEN DNA match made much like the guy in California. 28th case solved through matching from sources like Ancestry.com and 23 And Me.
This was two elderly women, one raped.

This is going to start happening more and more as more people willingly give their DNA to these types of businesses that are then sharing it with law enforcement.

Pretty amazing what DNA and other forensic techniques can solve these days
Glad they were able to eventually bring justice

Why would you do one of those things if you murdered someone?

Why would you PAY somebody to TAKE your DNA? shite is insane.
Somebody gave me a 23 and me gift thing for xmas. I sold it on ebay

On Saturday, 51-year-old Michael Wayne Devaughn of Rienzi, Mississippi, was arrested
quote:
Rienzi is a town in Alcorn County, Mississippi, United States.. The population was 317 at the 2010 census.
Rienzi was named for Cola di Rienzo, a medieval Italian politician.
quote:
Nicola Gabrini[1] (1313 – 8 October 1354), commonly known as Cola di Rienzo (Italian pronunciation: ['k??la di 'rj?ntso]), was an Italian medieval politician and popular leader, who styled himself as "tribune of the Roman people" in the mid-14th century. For his demagogic rhetoric, popular appeal and anti-establishment (as nobility) sentiment, some sources considered him an earlier populist[2][3] and proto-fascist figure.

The articles say that they matched DNA from his cigarette butt to the DNA profile from the rape investigation.
I didn't see anything about matching Ancestry or 23 and me databases....did I miss something?...

I was living in Starkville when this happened. Glad they finally caught the bastard.
That said, I would think it would be hard not to leave DNA at a rape scene.

Devaughn’s arrest is in relation to an incident that led to the death of Betty Jones and the sexual assault of Kathryn Crigler on Labor Day in 1990 in the 300 block of Lee Street, now Dr. Martin Luther King Drive.
Nothing good ever happens on streets named after MLK.
What stops these law enforcement agencies from doing other things with the dna of people who have done these kits? Are there safe guards built into that? Are we going to eat up like that gattica movie?

Yep. And more and more people are going to say incriminating things that Alexa and other voice activisted devices will turn over to authorities. Big Brother baby.

GEDMatch is the website making this all possible.
There are forces that are actively working to prevent police from using this technique to narrow down suspects.

Private DNA test kits like Ancestry and 23andMe offer users downloads of their genetic code, which they can later upload to sites like GEDMatch. These private DNA bases are closed to law enforcement due to privacy concerns.

I saw this on TV last night and fully expected you to say that when they took him out of the car to do the perp walk we had wearing an Ole Miss Rebels shirt!!!
Regarding the Commercial DNA companies, 3 years ago 23 and me had over half a million individuals in their data base alone. When you add in the other companies you can start to see the data set they can pull from.
For instance, I’m adopted and did the test for kicks a few years back and had over 300 “relatives” pop up. Closes was a 3-5th cousin. But found my biological mothers family through that match. You had to go back to a great great grandparent to find the common ancestor. And there were lots of siblings in those generations (like 8-11), hence all the very distant cousin hits. But this is also how they can build out a family tree and discover potential suspects. Now that DNA testing is so inexpensive they can screen many people to rule them out. The technology has been there, but the confluence of better, cheaper tech and more individuals in the data base are making these discoveries possible.
