GEN DNA match made much like the guy in California. 28th case solved through matching from sources like Ancestry.com and 23 And Me.
This was two elderly women, one raped.

This is going to start happening more and more as more people willingly give their DNA to these types of businesses that are then sharing it with law enforcement.

Pretty amazing what DNA and other forensic techniques can solve these days
Glad they were able to eventually bring justice

Why would you do one of those things if you murdered someone?
Posted on 1/19/19 at 10:28 pm to GRTiger
Because those people are fricking insane.

Well you don’t have to. One of your relatives is all it takes. They caught the dude in California because his daughter did it

It doesn't have to be you, a relative' DNA can be what leads the police to your door.

Why would you PAY somebody to TAKE your DNA? shite is insane.

They can extrapolate from relatives without the suspect providing DNA. Chances are someone in your extended family has done one.

The perp isn’t the one doing the Ancestory DNA test. It’s one of their immediate relatives, unbeknowst that their kin is a murderer or rapist.

Well that's some bad luck/delayed karma.

And that’s 28 cases in just the past year that have been solved like this.
How many folks are going to put their old uncle away unwittingly when law enforcement finds the match.
And once you or a relative does it, they have that DNA forever and these businesses are going to create a revenue stream by sharing it and finding matches (or near matches of distant relatives for generations to come).

Yeah solving these cold cases is one good outcome in an overall problematic trend.

On Saturday, 51-year-old Michael Wayne Devaughn of Rienzi, Mississippi, was arrested

Rienzi is a town in Alcorn County, Mississippi, United States.. The population was 317 at the 2010 census.
Rienzi was named for Cola di Rienzo, a medieval Italian politician.

Nicola Gabrini[1] (1313 – 8 October 1354), commonly known as Cola di Rienzo (Italian pronunciation: ['k??la di 'rj?ntso]), was an Italian medieval politician and popular leader, who styled himself as "tribune of the Roman people" in the mid-14th century. For his demagogic rhetoric, popular appeal and anti-establishment (as nobility) sentiment, some sources considered him an earlier populist[2][3] and proto-fascist figure.

I agree. This sick frick killed and raped elderly women. He was already in custody in Tichomingo for possession of meth, so it isn’t like he turned his life around after such a horrible crime from almost three decades ago.
But it won’t be long before law enforcement has DNA profiles on a huge segment of the population at their fingertips. Criminal activity will keep getting harder to get away with.
The flip side is that we have to trust that no errors are made because we pretty much have to trust the scientists when they tell us this guy is the one. Lots of room for abuse. I for one find it difficult to trust government to always act in the best interest of its citizens.

The articles say that they matched DNA from his cigarette butt to the DNA profile from the rape investigation.
I didn't see anything about matching Ancestry or 23 and me databases....did I miss something?...

It may have been in one of the two links I shared or maybe in the Knock Knock podcast I listened to. But they got the lead to him through a private company in Virginia that does the testing for these online services then made the match through the cigarette butt.
