I can promise there are no shortage of drama queens there who are DYING to be able to view themselves as martyrs on the altar of the First Amendment. No matter that what they reported was utter bullshite.

A "journalist's" claim that he was fed false information from a legitimate source should be taken as prima facie evidence that there was no source. The "journalist" can then choose to out the source or not, but not should end his career. The days when Ben Bradlee's assurance that he knew Deep Throat's identity was enough are sadly gone. Off-hand I can't think of a single media figure of today who is trusted to that degree by all sides. Tim Russert was the real deal. Woodward probably comes the closest today. Maybe Dershowitz if you count him as a media figure. But Bradlee deserved that trust. He was a journalist before he was a Democrat.

(And I'm still somewhat skeptical of Mark Felt as the sole source. He contradicts Bradlee's accounts in several ways. I think Deep Throat was more likely a composite.)

Who comes closer though? Cokie Roberts maybe. In a weird, weird way maybe Geraldo? Tough to think of many that are even slightly trusted across the divide. I love Sara Carter and have great faith in her professionalism but not everyone shares that view.
