What are we really missing during the government shutdown?

I can't tell that my life has changed one iota. I'm not asking to be a jackass, I really want to know… has anyone really been affected by this government shutdown other than the workers who, perhaps superfluously, work there?

Checking in as a NO, absolutely NO effect noted, felt, or otherwise observed.

I'm still waiting on the IRS to send me the 1099 forms I ordered from their website.
Other than that...my life has not changed.

Did you see the trash piles in a national park? DID YOU SEE??

Being honest. I've flown 6 times the past week and its been normal to extra pleasant when it comes to security. No strangely long lines, no issues really. Just business as usual.

Are those not printable at home/office? Our local libraries carry tax forms, although I don't know if 1099s are among them. You may also want to ask around if you know other small business people in the area, they may have some spare ones. That's what people do around here.

Seems like this is an entire layer of government we could eliminate and save the country billions toward reducing the deficit, no?

Not missing a thing. Let these Government workers eat cake. I hope they all lose their jobs.

My form 4 isn't getting processed by atf, but that's not really any different from usual.

This is the catch. During the shutdown, those of us who are essential HAVE to go to work. Therefore, most people don’t feel the strain and think all government workers are expendable. For example, if you have flown these past few weeks, my fellow controllers and I are still on the job, making sure all the planes are separated. I know we’ll get paid at some point, but I wonder how long we can reasonably be expected to keep this up.

Coast guard needs to be paid. Other than that...nothing really unless you are waiting on the ATF, who moves this slow even when they’re there.

Several freight forwarders and Logistics providers are having issues with EPA and FDA inspections . A lot of freight is going into storage and racking up demurrage because the inspectors are not working and the freight cannot be cleared. On the flip side, small business owners , warehousers and even the railroads are having a banner start to the year billing storage.

Contracts. I have clients waiting for contracts to be signed on projects. It’s not affecting me yet but at some point it could cost me business.

A penalty for not delivering goods as agreed. In this case even though they delivered the goods to the port on time.

My promotion packet to Captain is sitting at the last stage of the process, probably on someone’s desk, waiting to be signed. The group of packets before mine was signed, and it’s past the time mine should have been.
So yes, I’m missing out on some rank and extra money

The only negative from the Schumer shutdown: these cushy government workers won’t stop crying. They’re 100% incapable of finding work in the private sector.

Very few shipments actually require EPA inspection. Probably less than .001%.
FDA inspections are much more prevalent due to the amount of Pharmaceuticals that are imported from overseas.

EVERYONE being forced to work should be getting paid, period.
