Being a stubborn prick isn’t a millennial thing, I have worked with plenty older than 35 . The obvious comparison is Enron due to similarities in the documentaries.

The festival itself was largely a millennial attention seaking social media thing. Ultimately how big it got could only happen with social media.

Exactly. Again....the woman that owned the restaurant lost $$$$ over it as well. And all she as trying to do was keep everyone there fed. She agreed to the whole thing in the beginning cause they sold the Fyre festival to her as this wonderful thing that would happen in the Bahamas every year. Those poor people thought this would help their economy.

20 year old kid spending his parents money to see a music festival....don’t care about.

Someone nearly losing their livelihood cause of some arrogant 26 year old con artist....that I have a huge issue with. And....the fact that he still was out to scam people while on bail...means he should have deserved even more jail time. frick that dude....course he is in prison now....some guy will soon enough

Yep...they weren't even profiting they were just exchanging one debt for another and hoping they make it big. That's what sad about it, it wasn't a scam they were trying to maintain a life style and actually thought they were the next Mark Zuckerberg

Can be said for Madoff, skilling/lay and that Miami guy.

Ken lay was having to sell off stocks to pay for his lifestyle. Dude was the founder and chairman of a company that couldn’t be stop (until 01) but he couldn’t afford his life. That’s why all these people fail.

While I sympathized, but from what was shown they didn't have much in place as a caterer AND any caterer worth their salt would have taken payment up front. NOT take nothing and work for free.

I mean who works like that?

Also it couldn't have cost the Carter much cause all they served was bread, lettuce, tomatoes and process cheese slices....

Most workder and contractor/labor I know should be getting steady payment.

At most those guys did not have the final third of their payment but up until that point they were getting paid.

1/3 for materials 1/3 at the half way mark. 1/3 when they are finished.

Obviously the job was not finished so the last 1/3 can be consider a wash, but those contractors should have gotten 2/3 of the payments.

They couldn't have done the entire project for free...

Did you not see how he scammed his way out of paying his debts? He committed wire fraud. Told them a wire was sent, when it never was.

Also...,that woman’s restaurant didn’t just feed the guests....she also fed all the staff and housed them at her Exuma villas. She hired extra people and had them working around the clock. I’ll link the article that gives more detail about all the money she spent and never got repaid for. It’s not like she had this massive catering business. I’m not even sure she was the sole caterer for the event.

Actually this article says she was only hired to feed the organizers and workers...not the guests

LINK

Either way....I’m glad she is getting her money back from the go fund me. It was horrible seeing her as upset as she was on the documentary. She looked devastated by it.

So he committed Wire fraud for over 4 months with those same contractors ? So those contractors didn't get a single dime? The first time your money is funny you stop work. Second time you demand it up front.

I thought the Hulu documentary was better, but the Netflix one was worth watching just for the water/customs story and the poor woman who had to spend $50k of her own savings to pay off workers.
Billy McFarland and the idiots who went to that festival ought to be glad the unpaid workers didn't decide to start robbing dumb Americans to make up for the cash they weren't seeing.

Not knowing the story going in I fully expected they were going to say he offed himself after that black guy told him about prison life.

I have no doubt Billy will leverage this into some type of venture. Wouldn’t surprise me to see a movie or tv show in 6 years about the whole thing.

Hell the fact that Hulu paid him for the interview is the icing on the cake in this story

Dude, did you actually watch it? These weren’t exactly contractors, they were just dudes who lived on a 37 mile long island in the Caribbean, many of whom probably lived in poverty. “Rich” people showed up on an airplane with Ja Rule and said if you work for us work for us we’ll pay you. And then they didn’t. Most of them didn’t just walk off the job after they didn’t get their “2/3 payment” because they didn’t have shite else to do and figured they might as well keep working.

I was somewhat surprised that there were no reports of the horrible things people can do to each other that one night people stayed in the tents.

Staying in the tent the first night and sleeping on a wet bed was miserable and nobody got any sleep. I was asked to join the lawsuit but decided against it. Won’t lose thousands like that again. Lesson learned

if you're serious (hard to tell on the internet) can you share more of your experiences? I'd be fascinated to hear more from someone who was there, things that weren't shown in the documentary

I think I speak for everyone here when I say I'd like to hear your story of what happened and what it was like at Fyre.
