I've known a few people addicted to pills/drugs. I do suspect a couple of my friends are light alcoholics. A buddy of mine lost both of his brothers (both under 30) to overdoses, most recent was this past December. But I think they were intentional overdoses, not accidental.
Is there an underlying condition or symptom like depression or anxiety that fuels the addiction to alcohol or drugs?

I would assume almost always, yes. It is for me for sure. I cope with it.
