How many of you have Marmite in your pantry?

The British eat this on buttered toast among other things. It's derived from spent brewer's yeast and is packed with a lot of vitamins.
Has anyone seen this available locally? (BRLA)

I think I've seen it at World Market in Lafayette and I know there's a location in Baton Rouge, so you might give that a try.
ETA: Unless it was Vegemite.

Thanks Darla. I'll check there. If not, I may Amazon it.

I think I've seen it in Kroger as well. It's not uncommon to see it in stores.
I tried it in England. Definitely an acquired taste.

Don't have marmite, but I have about 3 kinds of vegemite. I happen to like vegemite, so I imagine I would be ok with marmite.

How is this different from vegimite other than England vs Australia?

I don't have any Marmite or Vegemite currently in my cupboard, but I do use it sometimes when I have it.
It is salty yeast extract, which is basically a way to add umami and salt to a dish. You can use it like MSG, soy sauce, fish sauce and the like.
I don't spread it on toast. That's not tasty for me.

Vegemite>>>>Marmite
Try Amazon. They have Vegemite so I'm sure they'll have marmite.
Aside from being great on buttered toast, it is a great ingredient to add to braised meat dishes and soups.

We had some Australians stay with us for a while when I was a kid. We ate vegimite every day. I really enjoyed it, it haven’t had it since they left. Might have to lick some up.

Similar base, but vegimite has added ingredients.
From a recent article on The Spruce Eats:
quote:
A British favorite, Marmite is a rich, dark-brown, yeasty spread for hot toast, wafer biscuits, a sandwich filling, or even as a hot drink. Marmite lovers will tell you it is good on or in almost anything. The spread has a dense, salty flavor so it is used sparingly. Marmite is made from yeast extract (a by-product of the beer brewing industry) and is a rich source of vitamin B complex.
quote:
Vegemite is from Australia (though it is also available in the U.K.) and is also a thick, black yeast extract spread. The difference is that vegemite has added flavors—like vegetables and spices—as well as coloring and other additives. Like Marmite it is spread on sandwiches, crackers, and toast; but in Australia, Vegemite is also used as a filling for pastries.
quote:
Marmite has a saltiness to it, which balances with a slight sweetness, and has a smooth and silky texture. ... Vegemite is salty as well, but also has a bitterness to it.
And who could forget the lyrics from "Down Under" by Aussie band Men at Work:
quote:
Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six-foot-four and full of muscles
I said, "do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich

Just picked up a small jar of marmite at Whole Foods, and it is now in my pantry.

Don't spread it like you spread butter or jelly on your toast.
A little goes a long way in this case.
