Raiders is tough to beat, but I always really liked the opening battle in Gladiator.

The opening scene would be the cemetery, but yeah the second scene is great.

The answer to me like most of these questions is Jaws. Always Jaws.

This is a good one for "biggest quality difference between opening scene and rest of movie" too.

First scene is great. It just gets worse from there.

Another vote for "Apocalypse Now". Incredibly powerful, imo.

I've been reading all of the awesome replies and have been giving thought to what makes a great opening scene. I guess it's the type of scene that immediately get's my attention and I don't have to think about what they hell is going on....With that said:

1. Star Wars (Original): There is now doubt what's going on, it's intense, and it immediately grabs you

2. Saving Private Ryan: Again, no question what's going on

3. Gone With The Wind: If you ever see this on the big screen it's really breath taking with an iconic score. You know this is about the Old South and you know it's about the fall.

4. The Lion King: Great Music, great scenery, just a delightful opening.

5. The Matrix: Trinities Opening fight was an immediate attention-getter

More complex movies like Star Wars, The Terminator and Blade Runner do the viewers a great service be providing a written narrative to help understand the setting. These always score well with me.

everyone shits on Dark Knight Rises - but the plane scene where bane is revealed gets me every time.

also the plane scene with Tom Cruise in MI4 i think - where he is hanging on the side of the plane is just fantastic - especially knowing he did the stunt himself.
