At the beginning of the season there were 7 black NFL head coaches. Thus far, Jackson has already been fired. Rumors are swirling that Joseph, Bowles and Wilkes will be out after very short tenures. There is even some “heat” on Tomlin and Marv Lewis (although both are probably safe). Right now Anthony Lynn seems like the only 100% lock to return.

Now, I think most could make logical, non-race based, arguments for the firing of all of the coaches rumored to be let go (Certainly their fanbases could). Unfortunately, we know the media doesn’t put much stock in logic and would rather fan the flames of divisiveness. To that end, the firing of over half (possibly more) of the league’s black head coaches in one season seem like red meat.

So, does the league step in to save some of these guys from otherwise being fired and/or mandate that teams looking for new coaches hire a black replacement in order to avoid a PR hit?

Theyre saying Jim Caldwell will get another shot. Does that cancel out one?

This happened a few years ago. There was definitely some outrage when all the black coaches in the league minus Lewis and Tomlin were fired last time

marvin lewis keeping his job for as long as he has should negate any and all firings of minority head coaches in the past, present, and future. he's jeff fisher with a better tan

Mike McCarthy is white. Does he cancel one out?

Wilkes deserves another shot imo, the rest all deserve to be fired, regardless of race

He's basically getting fired so they can get an offensive coach to work with Rosen, but they should've known they were going to need that last offseason.

Wilkes is going to be the one that draws the ire of the media. Only one season with a team that wasn't supposed to be good and had a rookie QB. It seems like he was given no shot to succeed.

Bowles's teams seem to always be close, but can't finish. Joseph made no sense from the get-go.

Weren't the Dolphins really bad on defense the season before he was hired by the Broncos?

well I don't know. maybe the collective football world should look at the on field results relative to any firings before jumping to any race based conclusions. that would be a hell of a concept.

Bowles and Wilkes are toast. Vance Joseph might have done enough late in the season to save his job in Denver (though probably not, that was a hell of a screwup there against Oakland).

Tomlin is still okay. Paul Brown doesn't want to spend money on a hot new coach, so Marvin Lewis stays.

Anthony Lynn is killing it in LA.

Jim Caldwell has a shot in Green Bay.

IDK, man. Seems like the usual coaching carousel to me.

They're on a 3 game losing streak to the 49ers, Browns at home, and Raiders. His terrible decision to kick a FG on 4th and inches from the 6 with 5 minutes left and down 4 probably lost the Browns game. Only way he stays is if Elway doesn't want to admit he's almost as bad picking coaches as QBs.

If I was an owner of a multibillion dollar business, I would be very pleased with people making me hire someone to my most important position based on race and not qualifications

Well, Hue's obsession with starting a lesser talented black QB over the number 1 draft pick got his arse canned.

Marv hired this moron after he was fired, so that shows you where his head is at.

2 of these listed are self induced.
